I assumed Sonic was flung into the future where Eggman's evil is law. Past Sonic is there but I guess present Sonic is still there with memories of the correct timeline.
All the robots have a cleaner "mass produced" look to them now, too, so I don't think they're taken straight from the older games.

They may be reusing themes but not the actual assets themselves. The modeling, design and texture work of Green Hill in Forces is completely different than how it was in Generations, plus Generations had Perfect Chaos, not Chaos 0. Egg Dragoon at least its a completely different boss fight but it feels weird making it an early game easy battle.
