Why does he hate paper mario so much?

He is senile and hates storytelling.

Because anything good involving mario that doesn't involve him makes him feel threatened.

He doesn't hate Paper Mario, it's just that he tried to apply his traditional Mario mentality onto Paper Mario recently (aside from how the 2D games have been rehashes).

His word was taken for authority and Tanabe only made it worse since he only knew about Toads and the devs thought Sticker Star was well received enough to warrant Color Splash and that the producers assumed that Mario can't have two turn based RPGs and that consumers "deserved better" despite how nobody complained in the first place
In the end, it's all misguided direction that has him think he did all this to make Paper Mario better when in fact it only tore apart the fanbase and threw away any optimism for a return to form

He didn't order the developers to take away party members. We could have kept party members and had them be mainline characters, it didn't have to be this way.
