These are the artwork Pauline's current design is based on, she just dyed her hair (or it was dyed in Donkey Kong and she's naturally a brunette).
she was changed into a brunette bombshell for donkey kong on gameboy

Intended to be a popeye game.

Limited palette. Color contrasts. Simple, really.
They're not the same person. One on the left is Lady. And the one on the right is, of course, Pauline.
Sprites often didn't back then. Systems couldn't output any color they wanted, there were significant palette limitations.

oh, okay then
New Pauline and New Mario aren't the same as Old Pauline and Jump Man. Donkey Kong from the old game turned into Cranky Kong.

This is her last appearance.

Because she's actually Olive Oil.

Not really. It's from a Mario Character Guide that was published in the early 90s. Yoichi Kotabe didn't start drawing art for the Mario series until Mario 3.
What if Pauline and Jumpman are Mario's parent?
But hey it's just a theory...

Wait, she's the fucking Mayor? Was Donkey Kong using her as a political hostage or something?

I assume she became mayor afterwards.
