Play AM2R and the Remake. AM2R Is more of a straight remake of 2 with added stuff and zero mission controls, while the new remake seems more like a re-imagining, with a completely different layout and gameplay.

This thread makes me realize my concerns over what will happen when the 3DS comes out.

If the 3DS version is not blatantly god awful, I am concerned that there will be "Metroid II Wars" on /v/ for a bit. If not by people with strong opinions, then by the agitators on /v/ who have a maniacal obsession with video game-related conflict but no stake on Metroid. 3D vs 2D is one thing, but really Metroid discussion doesn't need anymore of that.

Personally, the most interesting path to take is to play the original, then AM2R, and then the official remake. It will certainly be interesting how different people interpret original content and try to remake it. If you just want a decent game, then just go for AM2R, then play the official remake depending on how you like the feedback after release.
