This seems to take some time after the events of the first game, so there was another cataclysmic event of some sort, this time even more far-reaching than just the spirit tree going out of whack.
In any case, Ori can't really help it as his race lives and dies by the light of the spirit tree, even if it comes as a detriment to other inhabitants of the forest. With the exception of the unexpected outburst that set off the events of the first game, it seems that most creatures have adapted to deal with it.
