Is it just me or yakuza 6 looks like absolute shit? The combat looks broken and the heat actions look like shit, the story seems retarded, haruka is a milf, and overall most of the side content from mini games to stores and areas in the city have been removed. I played the series since the first one, but I guess it had to end at some point.

Anyone who played the jap version here? Is it as bad as it seems?

I'm on the last chapter of Yakuza 0. Does it still continue after the story is over? I'm still messing around with the real estate business and cabaret club. Or should I save that for the next playthrough?

Don't go for gimmick hands if you can help it.
If you see the green dragon, the red 中, or the white tiles try to make a double or a triple out of them for extra points.
Wind tiles can be used as a double/triple but unless they're your wind position you won't get extra points.
Press square at the start of every turn just to see if you can Riichi.
Do not reveal your hand at all (Kan, Chi, Pon) unless the combo you're creating makes up the points you lose from revealing it (Usually by doing one of the special times). Revealing your hand with Ron is usually fine but try to hold out for Tsumo if possible.
Pay attention to discards, you don't want to be making a hand that requires something that already has two or three discards on the field.
Starting hands you should always discard winds unless you have a double or triple and want to try your luck, then move onto the special tiles unless you got a double or triple on them.

I basically just had a trial by fire during 2 to get the win trophy which taught me the basics and then something clicked while playing 4 and it's been great ever since.

What are you not understanding? To win you need a combo of 3 melds (consecutive or triplets) and a pair. Every tile goes from 1 to 9 and there are 4 of each tile. Dragons and winds are 4 for each type. Memorize the winning hands, and if you can't get any of them, go for the regular win with 3 melds and a pair. Don't bother with calculating points, the game does it for you. These are the basics.

For dora, is like in Texas hold em, the central tiles will give you additional points, but unlike Texas, tile+1 gives the point. For every poker (4 identical tiles ie kan) another dora is revealed. Red Dora is an optional rule, if you have a 5 of amy tile, it gives you a point.

Finally, if you steal a tile your hand may have no points so you wont be allowed to win. So don't steal regular tiles, but do steal dragons for example. Winds are the same shit basically, except they rotate, so try to get your seat wind or the general wind.

For discards, get rid of single winds or dragons first, then of tiles you have no or low chances to get into a triplet, then of tiles you don't have chances to get into melds (remember there are 4 of each tile, so if you have a set of 1 2 and you need 3,but all 3s are down already in opponent discards, you're obviously not going to get your meld completed).

That's basically all you need to know.

Oh I forgot riichi. This is when you need just one tile to win. If you riichi, you must bet all on getting the one tile you need. Then you automatically must discard every tile that is not your missing tile. The game tells you how many of those tiles are left, so never riichi if you need a tile that is the last one left.

Also you can't riichi if you have open melds (ie melds made with stolen discards).

I think if you just do the story, skipping all side-activities, then TNO is longer. But Yakuza is still not exactly short.
And if you haven't played the series before, just don't expect GTA in Japan, because it's not. If anything, it's more like a JRPG with beat-em-up combat than an open world sandbox.
