I think they're banking on the fact that since people really want to play as BP, they're going to be willing to pay more for him. They're in for a rude awakening.

I'm still hyped for the game because of its gameplay and the sheer potential for craziness, but there's no way I'm going to buy the vanilla version. I'll wait for Ultimate MvCI, unless they announce you can earn Fight Money like SFV and purchase the DLC characters that way.

I remember back when MvC3 was announced. They hyped up this story mode they wanted to add. They talked about branching story paths with you deciding your party and stuff like that. I absolutely loved that idea, I even bought a next gen console just to play MvC3. They ended up cutting the story mode out of either laziness or budget/time constraints, it sucked but the game ended up pretty great. Now all these years later they announce a new MvC with a focus in the story
