I think that what we are looking here now is another version of Generations. First game was about different ages - classic, adventure, modern. This one may be about different... Dimensions? Continuities? Look how somewhere in gameplay bits there is some animal soldier talking over mic. While it's true that there is Boom, where we have many "normal" (non-heroic) animals, I think that they might want to bring comic to the table. It's asinine thought and most likely impossible considering how archie sonic drowned in legal cases, but it would be kinda cool if they acknowledged it, even if post-mortem.
At any rate, I think it's safe to assume that we have three nemesis pairings: Modern Sonic - Eggman, Classic Sonic - Metal, and Avatar - Unknown the Edgehog. They may fight each other over the course of game, but last battles (except Super form fight, whatever it may be this time) will be like this.
