because nintendo calcumalated that it's cheaper to get unreal ported and licensed that it would be to develop a custom engine, mario odyssey is also unreal

It saves time on engine work, is easier to find people that can use it effectively, and makes it easier to outsource if necessary. Square started using it too for those reasons.

Because Unreal 4 is actually really good, and by supporting it for the Switch they're opening up the way for a bunch of games to be ported to it as well, it's not rocket science.
