Why aren't we talking about this masterpiece?
>>
There was one thread about it but it was just console war shit.
>>
Already had like 3 or 4 maxed out reply threads about it.
Original Trilogy vs G.U every single time.
>>
What about the original quadrilogyy?
>>
>>380291117
There's been a couple threads already. While I wish it was an IMOQ remaster, I never got to play G.U. so I'll be able to give it a chance in 1080p.

How does the G.U. series compare to IMOQ? Is the former more enjoyable?

Pretty excited desu. Always wanted to play GU. but a) eurocuck and b) never got around to emulating it.
>>
Never played them guess i'll keep an eye out for the PC version.
>>
>>380291990
Gameplay is a lot better in G.U., characters are debatably worse, story is a lot more mucked up in human drama then the ghost in the shell type stuff about what defines human consciousness the first one went for.

There's quite a few more unique areas and some of the new dungeon designs are great but there's less overall variety going on. You'll kill yourself after hearing a certain dungeon theme after so many times.

Overall I like G.U. a lot. I like IMOQ more, but G.U. isn't terrible.

Despite owning the G.U. trilogy, I'm super hype for this. And new content, too. International release when?

Sure I'll buy that, but I'd rather have the originals.

>>380302945
If this goes well there's hope for an IMOQ remake (which could help more than a remaster like this one).
And they say they're working on more projects, so it could be one of them too, but this one needs to sell well so those aren't cancelled.

Probably IMOQ more than G.U. You might enjoy G.U, but G.U is more character and relationship centered. Even if you do love IMOQ, you'll still end up having to deal with the shitty gameplay for it, but if you really REALLLY like GiTS type stuff then I still recommend it. You'll probably get more entertainment out of G.U when you get around to it as well then, since the worldbuilding stuff is mostly hidden in references to the old games in G.U.

Because it's mediocre at best. I have no idea why people ever thought of it highly, except maybe because it's not very well known and you're all giant hipsters. The story is retarded top to bottom, and the characters are some of the most annoying, cliche pieces of shit I've ever seen in a JRPG. Combat was the best part, but it was only alright.
>>

>Is it possible to play through the G.U. series without spoiling the IMOQ series?
Sort of? You won't get directly spoiled on plotpoints I think, but there is alot about the mystic atmosphere in IMOQ that becomes alot less mystic if you've already played G.U.

The remaster isn't going to come out for a while, so I really do recommend just going back and playing IMOQ.

Sign > IMOQ (Play 1 episode of Liminality after each game, they were bundled together with each installment and happen parallell to the plot) > Roots (prequel to G.U but it's really bad in alot of places but still elaborates on certain characters in G.U) > G.U > G.U Returner.

I also recommend not going to these threads much until then, since there is a whole lot of spoilers that can be accidentally dropped that relates to the characters.

It's so fucking boring. It's an action RPG with menu-based combat, you don't get worse than that. Not to mention it's braindead as all 7 hells, so it wasn't even for the sake of strategy.

Kite did more consistent damage, though, particularly when using skills. Most normal encounters could be finished quickly with elemental skills. The only things that did more skill damage were Wavemasters, but since their A.I.s were retarded, they just tended to die a lot.

For other classes, their attacks are too slow, there are too many pauses between attacks and they had shit for elemental abilities.

>IMOQfags still acting like the game wasn't the most tedious shit ever
I like the setting. I like how they built everything up from the mysterious aspects of it. However, actually playing the game is taxing and completely unfun. I just go into a fucking trance clicking pause over and over to select the same fucking weakness skill as usual without any goddamn thought because the game doesn't require any of it. It's a grindy game with an unfun combat system, which is the worst possible combination.
Do I regret playing it? Fuck no, but I'm sure as hell not going to call it great as a game. If anything it's something that would've just worked better as an anime, since every single interactive aspect of it was bad except access to the BBS which made the experience surprisingly more enriching.

People like to delude themselves every goddamn thread, but if you're going to unironically claim that the gameplay in IMOQ wouldn't need to be changed from the ground up to be remastered, then I have no idea what to say. The immediate response from anyone who's used to modern games when playing IMOQ is going to be "why the fuck do I have to open the menu every goddamn encounter to select what skills to use over and over"? I won't even go into the grind required to open portals, since that's easy to mitigate by just lowering the amount for each, but that's something that only applies to a remaster. For the original quadrology, that was a massive pacing issue and just made it feel like a slog.

>>
>>380309337
Thats not gonna fucking happen and you're crazy for thinking it.
Maybe in some strange world where .hack remastered sells tons of fucking copies we can see a IMOQ REMAKE
>>
>>380307368
You're not breaking up the flow of it at all, because the rhythmic menuing IS part of the flow. Once you've used a move once it doesn't even take a second to use it again because you can push triangle once and X twice and there your have your move again.

There's also plenty of encounters in the game that can easily end in death without proper preparation and gameplay.

>>380307729
IMOQ doesn't need changes. The modern casual audience is the lowest of the low and the less devs pander to them, the better.
>>
>>380309215
It does not have better characters, and better story is arguable. People really oversell the story when it's just the general worldbuilding that's solid. The actual motivations of characters and the chain of events were really not interesting, and the conclusion of Quarantine was weak at best. I'd say the only reason there's even an argument about IMOQ having a better story is because of Vol.3 of G.U shooting itself in the foot with the dumbass Cubia plot and dragging things out when most things people were invested in ended in Vol.2.

Also, you're completely missing the point. They would need to have to change the gameplay entirely for a remaster, to the point where it's alien from the original to turn it good. At that point, I'd rather they just remaster G.U which both is more modern in terms of its approach to story and characters, and had a flawed combat system that could be fixed with not too major changes.

>>380309729
You would be surprised. Every fucking .hack thread some retard likes to pretend like it's good, there's one guy who went obsessively hard into comparing it to Diablo and pretending it was the same thing.
>>
>>380306498

Hey man. I like IMOQ as much as the next guy. But the gameplay is just bearable. I mean, it already felt dated 15 years ago.

I like it regardless, because it goes really well with all the "MMO simulator" thing. But the gameplay is easily the worst aspect of it.

>You're not breaking up the flow of it at all, because the rhythmic menuing IS part of the flow
What complete and utter bullshit. It's tedious and boring as fuck, it breaks the flow of any sort of sense of progression that can be made. Literally the only encounter in all 4 of the games I EVER had to be prepared for was Skeith, the rest I barely gave any thought to at all beyond "use weakness on X". If you really think that IMOQ wouldn't be a massive fucking failure and get shitty reviews + sales if they kept the same shitty combat system, then you're exactly the type of delusional nostalgiafag that I'm referring to.

>>380310275
The characters can generally be tied to popular archtypes, and they're done so in a good way. Whether or not you find a good thing doesn't matter, because it's what actually sells, something that .hack wants to do if they actually want to bring the franchise back. Characters in IMOQ really did not get fleshed out all that much, and most of them were only known at surface level in comparison, and thus would easily be dismissed as bland.

The story is more linear and gives a direct sense of progression, and again, it's more standard. IMOQ was entirely about worldbuilding, meaning the actual plot took a backseat to finding out how different aspects of The World worked. It was interesting, but it's also not nearly as safe of a formula.

>>
Depending on how well this does, we may get original series remakes. But I doubt it. .hack was at the height of its popularity with G.U. Vol.1, but it slowly fell to obscurity.

Honestly, I think the only reason the original series was such a hit was due to the aggressive publicity campaign. Seriously, I don't think any game company put so much effort into selling their shit as these guys.

And finally, here’s a bit from the interview with Hiroshi Matsuyama of CybcerConnect2 and Bandai Namco’s Daisuke Uchiyama:

2017 is the 15th anniversary since the release of .hack, and 10 years since the conclusion of G.U., and it also happens to be the year G.U. takes place. That said, it was decided that this year must be one for a reboot.

The reason they’re going with a remaster instead of a brand new title is because it’s been a while but more importantly to introduce a younger generation of fans to the .hack series.

While it is a remaster, it feels like they’re mostly remaking everything. All three volumes will be playable. As one of the new elements, players will meet Haseo “for the first time.’

And finally, there are other plans in the works for the .hack series’ 15th anniversary.
>>
>>380311621
I just grabbed them from google.
>>
>>380311075
Well it helped that not only was .hack a unique series with an interesting premise at the time, but it was the early hayday of the PS2 and people were starving for quality JRPGs. They could use the MMO setup as an excuse for low budget for the actual game even, though I guess not all that low budget given that the games shipped double-disc with anime episode tie-ins.

It stuck out like nothing else at the time. Then the series expanded, and it became super niche to the point that despite knowing a lot of kids with PS2s in middle school, only my best friend at the time and this big black kid knew about .hack anymore. It's how I even played G.U. disc one by borrowing it from the latter.

I feel like the characters in G.U. were really bizarre. I mean, they all acted as if the game was real life somehow. It's like they too their role-playing way too seriously. I can understand if a few characters were like this, but nearly all of them?

In the original games, the characters felt more grounded, andx you could count the number of weirdos in two seconds. Apparently, Balmung is just like that by default.
>>
>>380311330
Is it a safe method? Yes, but does that mean it's bad? No, and if you somehow think that's the case, then you really are a retard who hates things solely because they're popular. Character archtypes that are used often are usually done so because they work well. In G.U, they were definitely used well, and all of them have their own personal arcs that make sense and help you get invested in them. IMOQ did something different which is fine, but it's also not something that a franchise that's trying to rebuild itself should do. Also, one big point is that they all actually have clear development. Most of the characters in IMOQ were static as all hell and mostly just served as backdrop to the events taking place.

I imagine that's because to them, everything feels really real and personal. They likely don't see eachother as game models but people dressed up. Our technology just can't portray that very well.

All of the characters in G.U are meant to be nutjobs, that's how people become after being influenced by AIDA, and that's usually how those who have had any sort of connection to an Avatar in the past will be. The characters in IMOQ were more grounded, but they also did not stand out nearly as much. The two games have a completely different focus. For IMOQ, it's worldbuilding, for G.U it's characters.

So you have literally no argument? I'm explaining to you why they would go with G.U instead of IMOQ, something you refuse to understand because of your nostalgiaboner for menu-driven action combat. If they want to bring .hack back into the limelight and get you that precious IMOQ remastering, then they're best off starting with G.U. Complaining that I sound like a "marketing faggot" just means that you're telling me that I'm making actual sense in terms of a business decision.

Yeah, but I'd say the PR campaign is where most of its stopping power came from. You may not remember this, but these guys were crazy aggressive about selling this game. They made .hack//SIGN in order to raise intrigue and interest before releasing the game, something that only children's series like Pokemon did at the time. They constantly talked about the big name guys attached to the project, like Sadamoto and Ito. They bundled each disk with an OVA. They even made arrangements with G4, and American TV channel. The shit they did to promote these games was unreal.

I never claimed that they were boring characters, the characters in G.U actually fucking stand out and have emotional moments and development throughout the series.

What you're asking for is an unorthodox method of handling characters, which is fine. However, "unorthodox" is really not something you want to stamp your characters as when selling a game, since that means "more likely to not be liked". Characters in G.U have formulaic aspects to them, but they aren't bad or boring because of it, it just means that they're recognizeable and have an actual audience in place already.

>Chim Sphere and Virus Core possession cap at 999

>Battle tempo increased with a rise in offensive ability and reduction in hitstop
Some enemies had a gaurd that would stun your combo, or they wouldn't stun, and a shitload of other things you couldn't do anything about that seriously damaged the flow of combat. This is an excellent change as well.
>Weapon skill up rates increased
This is another pretty big one. Leveling up weapon skills was really, really slow, and poorly paced.

I'm saying that if you want the franchise as a whole to succeed, then starting with G.U is the best choice. And again, you're just spinning "using working formula" as bad. There is no need for every game to innovate the fuck out of everything, that's just generally not going to end well. G.U is good, in fact G.U is great, and so are G.U characters. Are they handled the same as IMOQ? No, but they have no reason to be.
I like plenty of things about IMOQ. The BBS was great, and probably the best feature that could ever be implemented in a game like that. The messaging system did make the world feel more real. Every single cutscene in the game is great. The dungeon system was neat and did give you a reason to explore. However, the last part became more tedious than anything because of the gameplay being what it is, and that really is the biggest crutch. The gameplay is not something you could ever sell in a modern game, it'd just be a complete fucking failure because people don't have low enough standards to put up with that. Has nothing to do with casualization, since even the most casual retard can clear IMOQ since it was everything but difficult.

You're missing the point so hard on my argument that the only thing you can even see is me telling you that starting with IMOQ remasters is bad, without any of the reasons behind it. .hack is an interesting franchise, one I want to see succeed, and with the reboot, hopefully continue eventually onto another game of the same quality as IMOQ or G.U, since it is the franchise that handled the whole MMO thing the best. I'm not not a petty shortsighted dumbass who only wants remasters of the first quadrology and then bury the franchise after that like you.

95% of the games I've played on my life have been western and the only turn based RPGs I've ever played to completion are Pokemon and Lord of the Rings the Third Age back when I was like 12.

I mean, Haseo's the only character that changed forms over the course of the series, everyone else kinda was stuck the same as they always were.

Similar boat as you. I grew up seeing .hack anime and games on TV and shops. But I never paid attention to it so never watched or played the series myself. So I've only myself to blame.
Apparently its about an MMO called the World, so it was similar to today's SAO for the past generation. If I'm correct then the games came before the anime, so the games are entry points for the series.
Needless to say this is a good chance to give it a fair assessment by trying out the HD collection.

The only reason its even on hiatus is because they didnt give a shit about keeping it alive to being with.
They didnt localize Link, then theres was like a couple anime and CG movies, then they released a fighting game that also never got localized, and maybe I'm forgetting something else they released that WASNT an actual game.
Then here we go to a collection release.

Seriously its no wonder the series is dead at this point.
In case that they stop bothering because the games didnt sell well then why even bother to release a collection now?
I'm not sure if its related but I'm gonna guess it has something to do with all those Naruto Storm game they released almost every year since the first one.

That's not true at all unless you believe that depth being sacrificed for "polish" is a good thing. Not that games now are even more polished either, being as riddled with technical issues and bugs as they are. There's nothing "typical" about his journey as a character. For a series that is full of dysfunctional people and nutjobs, I have to admit that while Kite wasn't exactly a distinct protagonist by any stretch of the imagination, he's refreshing for a protagonist. He's as new to The World as a first-time player is so he's got a reason to be asking about what the hell is going on, and even despite facing the threat of a coma every other day and danger leaking into the real world, he's actually pretty clever and a good team leader, not to mention more than willing to have his light-hearted moments and have his occasional goofing around in things like the email chains. Compared to everyone else overreacting, especially Black Rose, kid conquers his sheer abject terror and just gets shit done.

G.U didn't remove jack. It's a character drama that took place in a pre-existing world that had been built up by previous installments of the franchise. The focus in G.U was the characters, and it did that tremendously well, where you had plenty of characters who felt like they were involved in a major way, all of whom you could explore further if you found interest in them. On top of that, it had a protagonist that actually grew naturally, and done really well at that.

>.hack was at the height of its popularity with G.U. Vol.1,
IMOQ was vastly more popular than GU. By the time G.U. Vol.1 came out the franchise had been dormant for years G.U. didn't really kick up a spark because people moved on and its "episode" format which was considered "unique and new" at the time was seen as bullshit in order to sink consumers wallets for essentially buying 3 of the same game for $50 each
>>
>>380324316
Yes, look a few posts above that one.

If you read the Manga it's even worse. Elk literally lost his mind and went full blown NEET after losing Mia from the server fire, and was pissing in bottles in a one bedroom.

Fuck man, if anyone hasn't read the fucking Manga because it's so much better than the games story wise. Haseo is actually alpha as fuck too, aside from the whole getting cucked by Ovan.

Yeah, he was about as edgy as Sasuke. Difference is he actually had a realistic worldview and was mainly just trying to deal with the consequences he had been dealt by the end of Roots. Hell, he even outgrew his Sasuke phase, without that being the end of his character, as he was pretty damn mellowed out in Vol.3.

-.Hack// tries to emulate an MMO. Your friends even send you e-mails and shit.

-The plot is pretty cool. Some guy is killing lots of players and when they die in the game they also die in real life( coma state ). Our hero's beloved was one of his victims and now he's mad as fuck.

-The combat is action oriented and not really turn based like the SMT games. Lots of party members and weapons. Characters are pretty enjoyable.

To be fair the game constanly reminds you that Haseo is being a douche. His obsession is not portrayed as something cool and is clearly harmful for him and everyone around him.

His edgyest phase( DA TERROR OF DATH ) accomplished absolutely nothing and was completely crushed by Tri-Edgy. You don't think he's cool. If anything he's pitiful. That's why his arc works. It's really satisfiyng to see him become a better person.

Fragment was basically the IMOQ games condensed into a multiplayer form with a basic storyline along for the ride. You could connect to other players directly to enjoy multiplayer through some server software, and I think even make your own dungeons but i'm not entirely sure. It also showed that without the menu pause, those games would be ridiculously fucking hard.

If I'm going to play it I'm going to play the non-casual version I can emulate or pirate for free.

Ok but what is the optimal order in which to consume all this?
>>
>>380334350

It is however the only time they let me play a Blademaster

Are you guys ready for HANGEKI again?

Sign > IMOQ / Liminality > Gift (non-canon but is basically a love letter to the fans, best viewed after finishing IMOQ) > Roots > Legend of the Twilight (manga) > G.U > G.U Returner > OPTIONAL STOPPING POINT TO FUCK AROUND WITH OTHER R:1 / R:2 MEDIA > Link (after translation otherwise skip) > Quantum > The Movie > Thanatos Report > Versus

After that, you can jump into pretty much whatever the fuck you want. I recommend the AI Busters, G.U+. and the 4koma. Part of AI Busters takes place between Sign and IMOQ, and the other part takes place during IMOQ from BlackRose perspective. G.U+ is a retelling of G.U that elaborates on some points that the game didn't. The 4koma is not canon, but super fun.

I feel so fucking autistic writing this up.

The autism is much appreciated

Wasn't it Rengeki?

i'm really happy

>>
>>380335854
Legend of the Twilight manga most definitely takes place before //Roots.
>>
>>380336541
Shit, I thought that's where I put it. I forgot to list it at first when I was writing, but remembered at the last second to put it before R:2.

It does without a doubt.

I prefer IMOQ but that statement is objectively true.

Well he was basically designed to be a normal, albeit unusually mature, kid. Basically the opposite of Haseo.

Manga was actually really good, just a shame it started the trend of reusing designs.

And IMOQ was "pause constantly to do anything" if you want to simplify it that hard. G.U was by no means perfect, but if you're going to claim that IMOQ had better combat then you're just flat-out wrong.
