I just got done playing Resident Evil on the Gamecube for the first time.

I played RE5 around 2010 I think, and I always believed how "it's not a resident evil game". Fuck you, yes it was. It's an action Resident Evil game. But wouldn't you expect Chris Redfield to have gotten gud at killing zombies by now? If he still stumbled around like an idiot I'd be disappointed.

Also there's some references and just general gameplay aspects that I recognised were done as a callback to REmake. When examine those weird meat things the majinis are processing you're told it's "meat of unknown origin", like the meat in the basement of the Spencer Mansion. You collect gemstones, not for puzzles sadly but for money. You can read gratuitous amounts of lab research documents and other files to soak up some background story, and build some atmosphere.

The graphics are still fucking great. I busted out my 360 to play some Mercenaries lately and it's still fun, especially since now I've got some pretty good routes and character strategies figured out.

Also Sheva was great. Sexy, but with some character, and not a generic "black woman because diversity" appeasement.

What this thread proves is that it's been normal to see black people in video games for approx. forever. What's new is that the industry, in accordance with today's norms, feels the need to engage with the audience constantly and on every little aspect of their work.

I think pointing out "hey we made a black character" is problematic because it makes it seem like there's something unusual and newfangled about that. It's a sort of dog whistle. There's no such thing as a pointless fight for publicists -- if it pisses off the trolls, and the SJW crowd gets counterpissy, that's invaluable metabuzz and any related coverage inevitably makes the company look like they are being somehow brave

I think most black people would like be represented in media as though they belong there, not as though it's a challenge to some authority. The only authority is the market, which is obviously keen on seeing more diversity in games and esp. among protagonists so congrats publishers on deciding to sell more games. Most of the characters in this thread are NPCs or part of a cast with no lead, i.e. fighters.

I get your point, but even if something has a potentially good result, I'm not sure about the implications or the person's intentions. Do you think most of those devs actually care about black people or do they really just want brownie points? It's like affirmative action. I have the same issues with AA and I also think it's impossible to know for sure what anybody's intentions are any of the time. I mean, who can you ask? Not the person whose intentions you want to know.

I'm white, so I know what it means to get breaks I'm not sure I deserve. I've decided to just take them and act grateful, and it's everyone else's problem to figure out why they do or don't do the right thing. I'd like it if people made more diverse games just because they'd be more interesting, but ultimately I'm only going to play the ones that are actually interesting -- meanwhile, it'll become more normal, just like it's become more normal to hire black people onto a job without being forced to. That's good, but nobody deserves thanks for it, and certainly, neither do game devs
