I would rather a new game. I liked AoE II, AoM, and AoE III. I guess it's neat I'll get to check this out, but something tells me I'm just gonna go back to AoE 2/3 and wish for something more like I always do.

I get that Ensemble tanked or whatever.. but if MS can do this, they can sell me a new game. At least take the risk. It'll sell well enough to start, and if they fail then whatever, who cares? Not like the franchise will suffer with 2 and Mythology being cult hits.

people on this site fall into the trap of thinking that a publisher releasing a remaster and the same publisher releasing a new game are mutually exclusive. they're not. new AoE doesn't sell, and that's why they haven't made a new one since AoE online.

if microshit sees that this game sells like hotcakes, they're really out of RTS games to remaster so maybe they'll see the incentive of releasing a new AoE. i can absolutely guarantee you, though, that "moving on" and having "new, better games" was not ever part of the plan. that also implies that any new games made or published by microsoft in the past 10 years have been good.

I guess it's something. AoE I also covers a time period that some will like better than AoE II's, and updating with a ton of changes and polish to make it more playable by today's standards is intriguing. Not sure if I like the idea of a remastered soundtrack though, and the graphics look a bit jarring.

Forgotten Empires (the guys who make the AoE II HD xpacks and balance them) also have the game on their website, and it appears there's a classic mode.

Like just how much have FPS games changed since Quake II or Half-Life? There's necessarily no big improvements to be made. QoL stuff, sure, but the most important things were already there.

That said, I'd rather they made NEW games instead of just making half-assed graphic updates to old ones. It looks pretty good and all but in the end it I feel like it looks quite lazy. Like, you know, something one basement-dwelling mod man would've put together given a year and access to the game code to the extent that'd allow him to do it.

I might have to make a Windows partition just for all the great AoE games I can't play on MacOS.

If anything, AoE1's setting is much more interesting than AoE2's.

the gaming mode or w/e is a good idea
the gaming bar is also a cool feature when you remember it's there
it runs and boots faster than any other version of windows i've used. i stuck it on a 2006 dell laptop and it boots in under 30 seconds.
the privacy controls are a bit easier to get to and understand with the latest os build and microsoft asks you what you want on or off on first run of the os.
more compatible than i expected with ancient arcane weeb games.

downsides:
it downloads and installs updates without prompting you and thrashes your connection and hard drive while doing this. you can't change this behavior without group policy (which isn't available on win10 home) or a registry hack (which can get reverted if an update modifies the registry key).
the start menu is still a piece of shit, moreover it's now a SLOW piece of shit since it's loading all sorts of garbage now. replace with classic shell.
cortana gets more and more forced every update.
new content updates FREQUENTLY break all sorts of shit. if you're not a business user, microsoft wants you to be their guinea pig. make sure to defer content updates if you're on win10 pro or higher.
