Yeah I guess that's true. The pleasure in Metroid for me was always unlocking the map as you power up, and of course feeling of being alone in a hostile alien environment. I suppose that requires tighter, interconnected level design rather than an open world.

I think it may be possible to have an open-world Metroid. One could even argue that previous Metroid games were already open world. But I don't think the sandbox aspect of most open worlds would work with Metroid. You can't have that much freedom. The alien world needs to be oppressive and hard to traverse. In BotW the whole point is that you can go almost anywhere from the get go. I don't think this would work with Metroid.

Have you played Metal Gear Solid V?
If so, then you'll probably remember Afghanistan.
Even though Afghanistan was open-world, the many un-climbable mountain rows and cliffs often tunneled you through one of very few passages.
In MGS V, I'd consider this a design flaw. But in a Metroid game, this could be taken advantage of in order to create an open-world Metroid game which features the tight level design and structure which previous Metroid games featured.

I still haven't played V because I missed out on IV. I'm pretty sure it isn't necessary and I know everything that happens anyways but I wanted to play it first. But I could imagine how that would and wouldn't work in the different series.
