No risk for a new IP, the entire game is already there so you don't need to hire nearly as many people to be artists and designers, they already have built in fanbases so there are guaranteed sales.

new games take 4 years to make and cost a gorillion dollars

old games sold to you again are free money by comparison, even if new graphics cost a lot and they take like 1-2 years that is still much less than a new game

this is also why I highly prefer PC, I can go back and play an old game just crack up the resolution to whatever. recently played assassins creed 2 at 4k 60fps, meanwhile consoles are stuck with their 600p sub 30fps version unless they get a remaster for $60
