It's a turn based strategy game based around performing combos with your units to extend movement and damage. You can kick enemy units around the field. Destructible cover. Warp points on the maps. And that's just what they showed in the trailer.

After thinking about this for like three minutes I thought something. Maybe this decision was influenced by the success of mobile games in genres such as this. While rabbid humor falls flat I can see it's appeal to children.

I doubt Nintendo would ship it's most marketable plumber to a third party if they hadn't done some focus group tests or some shit like that. Let alone I doubt they would have let this get so far in production if they thought it would negatively effect the Mario brand. I think it's going to be pretty bad but sell well.

The gameplay looked shallow. I'm not saying it's going to be 100% but it is a Mario and Rabbids Game. There is no way in hell it will be as fleshed out as XCom and everything we've seen so far indicates toward it being very simple.

It's the first game to be built with a modern engine (Snowdrop) that takes advantage of the hardware and API. BoTW was a quick port, ARMS and such are still running on their main Wii U engine, and Splatoon 2 has slowly been getting graphical improvements with each preview that separates it from the original.

I believe this is the game Ubisoft had been hinting at for years now, so they basically only had to polish it for the Switch once they got devkits.
