They determine how many switch consoles they sell, because the ps4 and Xbox one X don't stand a chance. They will never have the amount of unique characters and ips that Nintendo could use. Will they? Who knows... Nintendo has fucked themselves over a lot when they could have sold lots more consoles if they only made games that were of the ips they own.

Instead of reviving their amazing old IPs (Animal Crossing, F-Zero, Metroid) they will continue to shit out announcements of more games like ARMS and Splatoon.

The wait between Brawl's release and Sm4sh's announcement was, like, 5 years. And it took over a year to develop, and they were still churning out DLC and updates for months after that.
