Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

I mean, you could make a fighting game for the mouse and keyboard or a racing game for mouse and keyboard, but that doesn't mean it is somehow superior to other control hardware simply because that's your preferred one.

RTS games benefit from a keyboard layout and the more powerful hardware of PC's. End of story. Now, if Xbones came with a keyboard and Halo Wars was designed with that in mind, I think I'd have far fewer arguments to make here, but everything wrong with Halo Wars can be simply described as "it was made for a controller with only eight buttons."

I myself originally believed that Halo Wars 1 was only going to be for Win10, and was going to pass it over entirely, but lo and behold Microsoft did something smart for once. But the damage has been done. Most people have long since become cynical and distrustful of the entire system.

The quality of the input/output of the controller isn't the problem, it's the simplicity which only having eight buttons brings.

Halo Wars 1 was designed with absolutely no hotkeys, no drag selection, no 'double click on one unit to select all units of that type', no control groups, and a circle wheel for all building construction, unit recruitment, and research.

It was LIMITED due to the Xbox controller, not improved.

And, since you do want to talk about the QUALITY of Xbox controllers, why don't we talk about how console controllers are so fucking bad that FPS games need to have built in autoaim to correct for the sloppy aiming. Utterly unthinkable on a mouse and keyboard.

I dunno if you really want playable Flood. I mean, it'd be interesting, but due to their parasitic requirements, it sort of becomes a bit difficult to implement in an RTS.

It was tried before in an Xbox exclusive Aliens vs Predators game, and what that basically boiled down to was that the aliens would go around throwing facehuggers on random livestock and Marines and Predators would just basically kill the environmental NPCs on sight.

Flood are best left as an NPC faction. Or, possibly, as a sort of special race for a nonstandard game mode. Like let's say you only have three or five players in your lobby. Switch it on over to 'Flood Defense', and it becomes a 4v4 match with a player controlled Flood that's supposed to wipe out everyone.

And if not for the fact that that game had no skirmish mode it would have been an amazing RTS, gameplay had nothing to do with its problems.
