Making games does take a lot of time and effort. The problem is you have timelines and due dates and management who've never worked in software in their life and have unrealistic expectations, so you work a lot of unpaid overtime even though you're salary.

Making your own games is fun (Until you get to the point when you stop writing the fun stuff and have to actually put real effort into making the game fun). Just make short games, those are fun. Pic related, it's a game that I gave up making after 8 hours because I got too bored.
