It has to be before 30BC, but somewhere near it.

I looked up when alexandria (one of the locations shown) was built and google tells me 332 BC. I'd warrant it's somewhere in between 300 and 30 BC.

>we basically copied the gameplay from the rest of the assassins creed series and copied it into a new historical context, without changing a huge amount, despite promising to take the extra year out to "refresh" the franchise and give new life to the stale gameplay
>we still have an open world map that slowly unlocks, complete with minimap icons
>we didn't even get the historical context right, we just mishmashed all the interesting bits from over 5000 years of ancient history, no attention paid to the actual context as long as it's cool and looks "ancient egyptian"
>we copied all the animations from previous games and just bunged in the same mechanics: tree climbing from AC3, bow mechanics from AC3, boats from AC2, walking/crouching animations from unity, "hide-in-the-grass" with a visual overlay to show you're hidden....

i can't believe how disappointing this looks, it's literally just a reskinned version of all the previous games. I didn't see a single thing that's actually new for the AC series, apart from the eagle, which was taken from Far Cry. Ubisoft are kind of stuck in the same old format of games but this is their flagship IP and I thought after the extra year it'd actually feel a bit more new.

Will probably pirate but definitely not worth paying for the same old experience with a new desert look.

>>
>>380097197
But AD is the same amount of letters as CE (Common Era).
the only difference is BC>BCE and the benefit is that it clearly defines the years as being before/after the start of the gregorian calendar

i tihnk of it like how they changed from measuring kilograms using a reference weight, which is innacurate and has potential for degradation, to using an independent measure (the weight of a certain number of silicon atoms) which is completely free from ties to anything else. Now we have a date system that doesn't rely on the supposed birth year of a prehistoric character nor the idea of a deity, just a simple independent date system. You can still say Jesus was born in 0CE and it works just the same. Although it's disputed when exactly he was born/died anyway and it's doubtful the dates are actually based on his life, more likely based on pre-existing systems from arabic astronomers, but that's not worth debating here.
>>
I'm torn.

On the one hand I hate how Assassin's Creed isn't even trying to be historically accurate anymore with all the revisionism and anachronism. On the other hand, I really really really want to play a game set in 'ancient Egypt' as it exists in through the coloured lenses of fantasy.

Like I want to explore pyramids and fight mummies and shit.

>>380094942

If I can recall, that dagger was made from meteorite, which I think then was the only known source of iron.
>>
>>380098842
>what the pyramids would have looked like

The time frame of Assassins Creed Origins is closer to modern times than it was to when the Pyramids were at their peak. Absolutely no way the gold and limestone looked anything like that or was even still around.
>>
>>380098953
Yeah I mentioned that here >>380094003
>>
>>380099138
the limestone wasn't removed until like the 14th century AD
>>
>>380097951
But the Common Era is a stupid metric to measure time. Since if you take Jesus out of the figure nothing out of the usual was going on. No real significant events took place and since Christianity is the bedstone of Western civilization, it would be stupid to trash it for the sake of being politically correct.

Also I'm subscribed to three different archeologist magazines and have bought numerous books on ancient and medieval history and at least 90% of them still use BC/AD system.

People didn't forge iron because you needed to achieve a much higher temperature to melt it. To even smelt it in the first place from the ore. They didn't invent furnaces with bellows that could pump air (oxygen) into the fire to achieve that temperature because they were unaware of the relationship between oxygen and fire. They didn't even know what oxygen was.

The moment they figured it out it became the dominant metal because iron is so much more plentiful than copper and zinc needed to make bronze. It basically was way cheaper to forge iron in terms of supply and you could outfit a whole army with metal armor and weaponry for a fraction of the cost. It's also why the technique was kept secret in many of the societies it was discovered in for so long because if the enemy figured it out then you were stuck in the same stalemate as before.

It was one of the technologies that was discovered in different places around the world at different times. Which isn't too common in the development of technology. It often is discovered in one place and spreads from there or a couple of places and spreads from those sources. It's more common among military technologies though because people keep those to themselves for obvious reasons (rival societies and the peasants).

I really wish I remember where I learned this from. Some history podcast or maybe a textbook. But I should check it out to make sure I have it right so I don't keep repeating bullshit. Maybe my memory fudged some of the details, but I'm pretty sure this is close to accurate.

A bunch of these guys were then hired as mercenaries and settled in Egypt by the Ptolemaic Dynasty, a Greek/Macedonian Dynasty founded by one of Alexander the greats Generals, centered on the city of Alexandria in Egypt that was Foun ded by Alexander as he was conquering the Persian Empire.

Makes more sense. I still hate Assassin's Creed though.

I loved the first one. Game play was repetitive as fuck, but the story was cool. It was set up to be a trilogy with the last game being Desmond fighting the Templars to buttfuck their satellite and keep them from taking over the world in 2012 with the Piece of Eden and the other artifacts from Those Who Came Before. I was looking forward to the whole end game story and was envisioning Desmond with a hidden blade combined with silenced glock 22 and a full arsenal of modern weapons doing the assassin thing in the modern world gathering information, raiding ancient vaults for pieces of Eden, assassinating key figures in the Templar leadership, raiding Abstergo labs and subcompanies, and eventually a full battle for the fate of the world.

The second game was great, Brotherhood got a bit wacky but I was down with it, but they just had to keep milking it. They had to turn it into a Call of Duty style never-ending series. Which I would have been fine with too. If only they finished the main story. They set it up perfectly for a trilogy. The narrative was solid. The concept was unique. It was gonna be awesome. Then they saw the profits. Especially the profits from the second game. And they abandoned the main story to make a bunch of offshoots. They should've finished the main story and made offshoots that were mostly inconsequential to the already completed canon. They could've had the best of both worlds.

I'm angry. ANGRY ABOUT UBISOFT.

Egypt was funny because they had copper mines but no tin but had no substantial iron as well so they had to import it all after the collapse anyway

It's going to be microtransaction shit just like the French one.

The combat looks fucking awful. I don't know what they're thinking putting this RPG shit in.
>>
>>380122725
Cool I didn't know this. I'll have to read up on this stuff some more. I love how little we know about the Western world before the collapse. I think it gives so many possibilities for stories set in those times and of course the real history itself is fascinating.

>>380123448
He didn't even mean to. He was just calling them out on their bullshit. Neither they nor he realized it would start a religion that would take over the world and eventually gain a short lived, but very influential monopoly on atomic weaponry and the modern military industrial complex.

>>380124496
Keep fighting the good fight, Rafiq.

How can assassins exist in ancient Egypt?
>>
>>380124496
Do modern Egyptians see themselves closer to Ancient period or the Islamic middle ages/Ottoman stuff?

usually to the islamic middle ages but that's mainly because of the islamisation of egypt. but that's beside the point. the point is that these niggers are trying to claim a culture that isn't theirs. someone got that pic from /pol/ where there was this ancient egyptian mural where the black guys were dick washers? shit was golden
>>
>>380126458
Didn't Egypt see them as primitive barbarians from the south or something?
>>
>>380125834
I think the sentiment of secular Arab nationalism is still a contender over there along with pious Sunni Islam. But I'm not the Egyptian, I just read a lot about current MENA politics and current events over there. I'm also interested in what he has to say.

Also the Mamluks were the Egyptian empire that got taken over by the Ottoman Turks so I'd imagine they'd see themselves as closer to them than the Ottomans.

>>380126458

They were Cushite invaders, weren't they? They took control of Egypt for a short time before being BTFO'd back to their equally shitty, but shittier because it's full of them, desert.
>>
>>380126789
you mean the Nubians?
They conquered them so yeah pretty much.
>>
>>380126789
Egypt saw everyone who wasn't Egypt as primitive barbarians.

Add me to that club as well. The gameplay stream after the show made this a day one buy for me.
The world design of that little bit they've shown was already superb

This game is confirmed bronze age right? because if that's the case that makes no fucking sense.

Literally all people did. Even uncivilized people. That's tribalism for you.

Troops of chimpanzees war with other troops when their territories clash. We were all gang bangers seven million years ago.

Egypt is rightfully Ethiopian/Greek/Ottoman/Mesopotamian/Roman since it was conquered by ALL OF THEM.

Those Sandniggers in Modern Egypt are barely Egyptian anyway so who cares.

Next time you get pulled over for a ticket your car is rightfully that officer's. Forever.

That's not how it works. You have to genocide them and move into their homeland for it to be yours. And at the very least you have to spruce up the place or at least make it stink like your stink.

A viable neutral date to track other dates to could be the end of the last age imo. Actually that already exists in the scientific community I believe this era is called the Holocene. They just can't agree on an exact date it started on
