When indie developers call their game either "XCOM" or "Dark Souls" inspired just as an excuse for unfair game mechanics

Play State of Decay.
It adresses exactly those points of criticism.
The deaths in state of decay are permanent, you lose that particular character and switch to another in your party
the game is great. try it.

What's it like being so incredibly bad at video games?

i have when I was over at a friend's house a few years ago, was pretty good

I never said that XCOM or Dark Souls were unfair, I just said that indie games that claim to be "XCOM" or "Dark Souls" *inspired* used unfair game mechanics and just claimed that "it's just like xcom/dark souls difficulty :^)"
how is dead state? I think I missed that one

I think I understand. They'll say "it's inspired by dark souls! because damage is high and animations are slow and there's stamina!"
But no indie dev is gonna put the effort into hitboxes like Souls do so enemies just have a canned animation that arbitrarily spawns a hitbox in front of them which is very inconsistent to what you're actually seeing, and they don't understand proper enemy behaviour or placement so it's enemies that just run up to you and attack and don't respond properly to taking damage. Or shit like enemy hitbox occurs immediately upon initiating an attack while the player hitbox comes out late, despite the animation being the same.
I've not played any big name games that do this but lots of unity asset flip "ching chong's first unity game" garbage do shit like this.
