What point in Japanese history? Feudal Japan, or even when Christianity was banned with the Jesuits being hunted down? That might be an interesting time. Also the Meiji Restoration would represent the quick change in technology in a short period of time with gameplay changing dramatically as the game progresses.

Egypt actually makes a lot of sense for a setting considering AC1's middle eastern setting
There's no way Japan could make sense in AC lore but you just know they're gonna shoehorn it in in a few years when they run out of setting ideas
