So I recently got witcher 1 for free and decided to give it a shot. Initially I thought combat system was retarded, but as I unlocked more moves it became bearable.
Anyway, now I'm in act 2 and I feel like there is too much storytelling! Especially the quest with the detective dude, I don't understand all of the connections between the characters, who did what, who killed who, wtf???
I feel like I got spoiled with easier games and my intellect has receded. I literally feel like an idiot when I have no idea what's going on.

Just keep doing them and pay attention. You'll find out who is who afterwards.

Witcher 1 is a casual filter, so just keep on going.

Who characters are and shit makes more sense if you read the books. The original devs made the game assuming the players had already read the books in Poland.
Just use a guide.

Modern games really mess with you like that. They just more or less subtly hold your hand through EVERY SINGLE THING, both the things that challenge your dex and your int. I've been playing a lot of PS2 lately and keep wondering why is this so hard. It's because all the training wheels I've been conditioned to expect aren't there.

The detective part is the best part of the game desu. Actual roleplaying and a story that makes you think instead of hacking and slashing your way through.

yeah if i remember correctly the first prologue and first act are kinda boring but the game quickly picks up and can get a bit overwhelming.
dont feel too bad if you have to stop every once in a while and wiki a character/faction/location. it only adds to the experience. I believe theres also an in-game encyclopedia if im not mistaken?
how are you enjoying the group stance? i loved seeing geralt just spin and chop heads
Yes, it's not a game for americans.
Read through the in-game encyclopedia of characters.

>I don't understand all of the connections between the characters, who did what, who killed who, wtf???
Yeah. You have the entire fucking chapter to put that together, that is the point. Of course you are confused, you just entered a conflict in media res: why would you expect to be able to know and follow everything from the get-go? The fuck is wrong with you?
