I've only just finished reading the prologue and it's been more enthralling that most complete VNs I've read. The writing is great, the protagonist is interesting and likeable so far, the early narrative is really interesting; and the PC-98 graphics and soundtrack work really well. The mechanics are pretty interesting, the prologue is almost entirely straightforward but now I'm into the game proper you seem to have a lot of choice.

Give it a go, anon, I'm really grateful to the anon who recommended it to me in one of these threads. I think the game just gets better from here.

I'd probably recommend them in the order I listed, but as a second thought, Utawarerumono is rather poor on the characterisation side. Majikoi might seem like a waifu game, but it has a solid story with an ambitious MC and an incredible true route, along with amazing characterisation for a massive cast. That said, the sequels absolutely do go down the path of shallow waifu pandering.
I should also caution you that while the Muv-Luv trilogy tells an incredible story, you need to play Extra to build up what Unlimited and Alternative pay off, and Extra is an excruciating 30 hours of high school harem antics that you will abhor if you don't like the characters. I thought Alternative was worth it, you might not.

No. Like I said, Majikoi had a pretty good story to it and great characterisation. The first game has a few short joke routes but most of the routes are fairly long and explore the character in question in depth, and there are even routes for the guys so you can see more sides to them (but no yaoi, thankfully). The various routes have many hints to the eventual true route which is great and wraps up the whole game wonderfully.
S on the other hand still has decent characterisation but the routes are all significantly shorter and full of sex outside of Tsubame and Mon, and have horrible leaps in development to force that sex through. S then has a true route which is an absolute fucking mess of poor characterisation and a hollow imitation of the first game's true route. S was a massive disappointment after how good the original game was.

Either way, this isn't so bad at all. The fact that VNs have such a high visibility in the west now(compared to before, at least), is more than enough to tip their karma into the good spectrum. What needs to happen is for ANOTHER company to show up and start localizing Visual Novels, to force Sekai Project to up their work quality.

I realized that aside from videogames this might be the most worthless medium there is.
The main audience is a horde of basement dwelling neckbeards, failures willing to spend money if that means they can fap to 2D girls regardless of the actual quality of what they're reading.
Not all VNs feature fapbait but even when they don't the writing is still incredibly shallow and the themes either unoriginals or badly presented.
It's like those who happened to be failures as writers converged to visual novels because it's the only medium with low enough standards that'll allow them to publish their crap. Most of them don't even know what pacing is and we end up spending hours and hours of our life reading bland, uninspiring stories with terrible prose and characters. While novels and movies can elevate the soul I believe VNs do nothing more than making it rot. I probably read like 70 VNs and it's a fucking depressing fact now that I think about it.
