The most immersive rpg of (technically) 7th generation. Biodrones hate it, soulsfags hate it and sonybros pretend it doesn't exist. This is because it's a classical crpg that's masquerading as a modern arpg. Some people just can't get over this apparent b8 and switch and go down screeching muh combat.

prepare to spend more than one attempt at getting into TW1. I got really frustrated the first two times I played it, and did really dumb shit to lock myself into a corner. sold quest important
items because I didn't pay attention. once I started investing in the story and paying attention I really fell in love with the game. TW1 made me read the whole series of fan translations. and I've only liked it more since then.

>>
>>379994042
Expect awful pacing. The game slow and can drag on for hours. First and second chapters are particularly guilty of this shit where you spend a lot more time trugging along running back and forth through fairly dull environments for way too long.
Expect terrible combat. Anyone who claims the combat is in any way actually mechanically good is delusional. The combat is utterly brain-dead. There is no depth to it, there is very little involvement to it. Some people might seem as "complex" at first but in reality there is absolutely no actual strategy, options etc... it's an exercise in literal routine with the exception of alchemy. There is no challenge to it either: there is ONE difficult battle in the game, mostly because it suddenly spikes up the difficulty before even properly explaining basic things to the player. It's right in the first chapter. Nothing else ever comes as an actual challenge.
Expect shallow actual character progression. This is not a complex RPG. It looks like it has a lot of options, but in reality there are no multiple build-orders, there are no specializations, no actual multiple ways to solve problems outside of dialogue choices and ONE quest that allows you to unlock optional solutions through reading a couple of extra books. Progression is flat and linear.
Expect really bad voiceacting and generally fairly poor translation of the english version.

On the other hand, you can also expect:
Absolutely AMAZING atmosphere, especially as things start to move forward around 1/3 of the game. The music is amazing, the environments are well designed, a few locations are breathtakingly beautiful.
Expect fantastic characters. Even small side NPCs have often surprising amount of depth to them, feel alive.
Expect great story, mostly driven forward by those characters.
Expect great choices and consequences, some really good questlines, fantastic writing.

In conclusion, expect a beautiful world and characters, but a lot of mechanical jank.
>>
>>380002526
I was being sarcastic, fuck the swamp, fuck the drowners and fuck you.
>>
>>380001565

>but usually the humans suck way harder.

This is just thrown in to cloud your judgement. Don't let the shitty 1% of the human population dissuade you into thinking they are just as bad as monsters, who eat/enslave/murder 80% of the time without a second thought.

Witchers were made to defend humanity, anon. Becoming obsolete is the final and truest fulfillment of their duty to humanity.

Being shoe-horned into a path is a bitch. I feel like Witchers are at their best when wandering around, poor and ready to take up whatever shitty job that needs doing, not actively following chasing a big bad.

Nope.
I meant the Beast. I found that fight unreasonably difficult on my first try. The thing that is really difficult about her is that she might be the only enemy in the entire game that can't be easily defeated without proper use of alchemy even on lower difficulty settings through out the entire game. A player, who is still not very well informed how to use the alchemy can be really raped by the thing.

Actually, TW threads around 2009-2011 were the WORST FUCKING THING EVER. Especially in the leadup to TW2/DA2's release, this board had the biggest fucking hate boner for this game - it was unbelivable. Seriously, it was one of the most hated games on this board. There's not as much customization as you'd otherwise think looking at the talent trees and whatnot.
All gameplay related systems are very much lore friendly in the sense that you are encouraged to use all of them in conjunction.
You're not a mage. You're not a soldier. You're not a hunter. You're not a diplomat. You're a mix of all of those.

USE ALCHEMY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
It's a terrific system with all sorts of meaningful and powerful effects.
To take full advantage of it, invest very quickly in all the intelligence perks related to alchemy as soon as possible.
Buy books that teach you about plants and monster parts.
Use bombs aganist gropus of enemies and ointments aganist bosses. In fact, use that shit constantly.

You can mess with the magic too if you want or you can skip it entirely. Your call.
People complain it's not viable or flashed out, but I think most signs are pretty neat and circunstancialy useful.
Just don't expect to be a mage character. Magic it supposed to be complimentary.

You can't just pick a sword stryle and go with it. You HAVE to use all three according to the enemies.
Maybe you could skip the group style, but there's not much reason to.
Only swords are viable. The only useful side-weapons is the torch, but you should be using cat potions to see in the dark to begin with.

PLAY IT ON HARD.
It will encourage you to use those systems and it's only really frustrating if you're one of the idiots who ignore alchemy entirely and proceeds to complain about the "rhythmic" and "simplistic" nature of the combat.

And finally: choose Shani.

I'm really sorry to tell you this: but you really misremeber this. Trust me, the conversations of about TW games are currently THE most civilized they ever were, and 2009-2011 it was the absolute, absolute worst aside from the few mega-shitposting-spikes like the downgrade controversy before release of TW3.

There were no positive threads about TW1 in the two years leading up to release of TW2. Occassionally, when a thread survived through first 100+ posts of pure, undilluted HATE for the game, you would have an hour or two of decent discussion among the few poles and czechs who stayed even past everyone getting bored, talking about the books and translations and often recommending literature to each other, which was nice.
But that only happened occasionally, and was participated on by a mere handful of people - usually the same people or at least people of similar background.

TW1 really was one of the most hated games of that time around here. People who liked it were an insanely small minority.

I liked it, but I still consider it the worst in the series. It takes hours to actually get going, and you never start to enjoy the combat, you just get used to it. 2nd half of the game is a hell of a lot better than the 1st half.

Why do people always complain about the gameplay? Not saying that the combat was anything great, but it didn't suck as much as people say. It's just basic rythmic combat, nothing to love, nothing to hate.

>TW threads have been disgustingly bad since the TW3 previews.
There are always these spikes. There was another brief period of hate for TW2 ("TW2 is terribly written, Geralt would never work for Foltest this way, TW1 had much better writing") and exactly the same thing happened to TW3 ("TW3 is terribly written, Radovid would never act like this, TW2 had much better writing"). There was the downgrade controversy thing, but then you have to also remember that much of that was actually an ORGANIZED FLOOD thing, to a point where mods had to get involved and clean up the board...
TW games always attracted a lot of terrible shit. But I still remember the lead up to TW2 release as the worst period. Everything that followed was just these explosions of shitposting, memes, you know the usual, semi-organized shit-flinging contests you see here SIMPLY because the subject matter draws attention.

The pre-TW2-release threads were much more frustrating, because that was not really about shitposting. It was not the kind of people that fling shit purely because "that is what they do".ยจ
It was much more genuine. TW1 was just really unpopular. In fact, it was deemed a completely obscure game, eastern generic shovel ware that people started being only interested in because TW2 was getting quite some marketing, and most of them just found it bad. It's also probably worth realizing that it was a time when Bioware was still the most popular company on this board (yeah, that is hard to believe, but it was like that at that point) and there was a lot of Bioware fans who saw the game as some kind of threat to their beloved cult franchises.
It was just bad because... it could not be brushed pass as "the usual shitposting asshatery" that we are accustomed to.

It was just an army of people genuinely finding the game offensively bad. For me, being stupid and young and relatively new here, it was pretty hard to swallow.
