Are mechanical keyboards actually a worthwhile investment or just a pointless gimmick?
>>
theyre pointless. just another way of charging young idiots $90 for a $20 product
>>
>>379947937
If you like nice things, they're nice.
They don't improve performance or anything, but neither does having a nice desk, or a nice monitor.

They feel nice to type on and are built well. They're a premium product.
>>
>>379947937
pretty good
don't buy gaymen keyboards and visit /mkg/
>>
>>379948139
Pretty much what this guy said, I like typing on them because the keys have a little more resistance and the sound is nice. Buckling spring keyboards are nice.
>>
>>379947937
99% of the time a gimmick.
Using a Logitech K120.
Typing speed of 112 WPM, perfectly fine, and although it doesn't ""feel"" as good, I'm mostly concerned with efficiency, and deeper mechanical keys tend to slow me down actually.

It MIGHT tend to make your typos less frequent when typing, but it's honestly not as important to spend 50 more $$$ than a cheap rubber-dome.
>>
depends on the switch you use i guess

from personal experience cherry reds have very bad tactile feedback, the key will activate long before it bottoms out, so stuff will happen in game before your brain registers a press, which is a very odd feeling. i don't know if other switches have this issue
>>
CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK
>>
>>379948478
All switches are like this, as in they register before they bottom out. The only exception is the buckling spring type switches which are unheard of these days and only exist on older models such as the Model M and derivatives.
>>
>tfw friend sent me a mechanical keyboard for my birthday
He said it was barely used but it looked brand new so I hope that motherfucker didn't actually buy a new one for me
>>
My WPM went up from 101 on a chiclet keyboard I bought because it was quiet to 110 on a blue switch loud as fuck mechanical keyboard. The mechanical one feels nicer to type on but sometimes I'm more concerned with annoying noises.

It's a meme, my man. People buy them because they are told they are better, and so they put out money to fit in and then parrot to the next guy how much better it is. You're not in a world championship for fastest typing, it won't affect the way you play video games, all you'll get is some clicking sound and some fancy leds for 20 times their manufacturing price.

Don't fall for memes, kids.

t. someone who fell for other memes, but not this one.
>>
>>379948859
Unicomp still makes buckling springs, and that's what I use. It's a noisy bastard but it feels good to type on, and it's heavy as shit.

They're pretty nice. Make sure you read up on different switch types, and don't fall for the gaymen or compact memes.
>>
>>379949029
this guy is right, a cheap, generic keyboard is perfect for 99.99999% of what everyone does.
>>
>>379949205
Compact is best.
>>
>>379949029

feels nice to use. like saying driving the most expensive car wont make you the best driver. or an expensive golf club wont make the best golfer.

its just nice to use and feels great
>>
>>379949342
no they arent. they keys feel sticky and I broke 3 walmart boards in a year before getting a mechanical.
>>
Pointless unless you play stepmania or osu and if you actually play those with mech kb expect your neighbours calling the police on you
>>
>>379947937
Depends on your budget and usage. I've won matches on cheapo $10 office keyboards. Paying extra for ergonomics and customer support is worth it though

I bought pic related with Cherry MX browns recently and it costed more then ten times as much than my previous Modecom keyboard, but I think it was worth it and it will last more than 10 Modecoms.
I used my previous shitty cheap ass Modecom membrane keyboard for more than a year, and the membrane was so worn out it was painful to type on it. The mechanical keyboard is way more comfortable due to the much longer key travel and the fact you don't need to press the key all the way down to register, The overall build is a lot more durable, the keyboard can register any number of keys pressed at the same time, and it has a nice configurable backlight as a bonus. I'd definitely recommend it.

>>379949342
maybe if you buy a new one every half a year or something

Why clean it?
I'll clean it when the dirt prevents contacts from responding.
It's fine for now.
Had it for 6 years, clean once every 2 years.
>>
>>379947937
Only shit I care about is whether or not I can press Shift, W, and Space at the same time. I fucking hate the shitty keyboards that can't do that.

What do you faggots have against numpads?
Numpads are amazing. Especially if you work with finance spreadsheets.
>>
>>379948138
Naah mate, they are actually very good depending of the keyboard you choose. I bought 120 quid keyboard and it's the best I have ever used in my life. I have gone through the original Silicon Graphics keyboards and numerous of generic ones etc. It makes a huge difference if you use keyboard every day at your job etc. Most plastic cheap keyboards are a-okay but there are issues when typing a lot. You don't want to have wrist issues etc, you want to have maximal ergonomic smoothness when pressing key. It works in gaming too, though.

I use a 144hz monitor, it looks nice, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend that it improves my performance in games.

144hz is too low still, you will see a great increase in visual motion when using 350+ hz screen. 144 is not that much better than 60 fps (which is damn low...).
>>
>>379955439
When will this ever be important? I've used a mechanical keyboard for months, didn't impress me, went back to rubber dome. Just like a mouse. You can blow $80 on something marketed towards "precision" and "For gamers!" or you can use a $10 Microsoft basic optical mouse.

In the end, it's all personal preference.
>>
I have 5 IBM model M keyboards that are still sealed and over 30 years old, got them for 5 bucks at a flea market. Gypsies didn't realize what they were parting with.

Got a non-seal model m I'm using right now. Only reason I enjoy it so much is the clicky noises, other than that its like typing with a brick.
>>
>>379947937
Ah the color of dried cum
>>
>>379957508
>When will this ever be important?
There are plenty of keyboards with retarded key combinations that can't be pressed. Shift is a common sprinting button and in some situations you can't for example backpedal, sprint, and reload. I ran into issues like this plenty of times with a digital and never went back, I find nothing but detriments over using a mechanical.
>>
>>379957508
It's just the easiest way to demonstrate that not all keyboards can hold down multiple keys at ones.

In a FPS, hold shift to sprint, W to move forward, and then hit q to change weapons, for example. Not all keyboards can do that. Some 4X/rts games can get pretty hotkey intensive too.

I managed to score a Razer Black Widow off Ebay for about 30 bucks. No fancy lighting, bar the logo on the front, only one USB socket, which is disappointing (my last keyboard had 2) but feels good when you're typing large sections of text. The sound is just really satisfying, you know?
