In previous cases Sony's been the one who's down with cross-play (at least with PC) while MS appeared to be the one against it, hence games like FFXIV skipping out on the XBone.

Mega Man Legends was made to get around the 2D restriction. Mega Man 8 only came out for the Playstation because the Saturn was getting it too.

Anon what? I can't think of a game that was declined due to a minor texture being swapped between the localization process. Especially when numerous titles exist that completely go against such a policy even existing.

As far as I'm aware, Sony's strict no 2D policy is what lead to Capcom begin development of a 3D Mega Man title as they wanted one of their well known franchise to be present on the current hot selling console. Mega Man 8 had the policy fight with coming over to the Playstation and not Legends.

8 only got on the system mainly due to the SEGA Saturn getting the game. Sony would allow 8 on the PS1, but only under the condition that the PS1 version received something extra that the Saturn wouldn't get.

All we got was a shitty booklet. The Saturn version got 2 extra bosses.

Providing a good online service improves customer satisfaction, which is good for business. Sony are preventing Minecraft players (mostly children who can't afford more than one console) from playing with their friends; and they're dividing the player base of an online game, which doesn't help the game's longevity. Allowing cross-play would not harm their business and would only improve the quality of a game on their platform.
