Why the hate for open world games? What would you rather have?
actual level design
>>379931917
Linear games with great story.
>>379931917
a good game

open level games

>Why the hate for open world games?
Westerners make open world games.
>What would you rather have?
Japanese games.
>>379931917
Actual well designed areas filled with intelligently placed items and secrets.
YOU KNOW
LIKE RPGS USED TO BE BEFORE THEY ALL BECAME FUCKING OPEN WORLD.
Open world means there is a whole lot of nothing to explore (most of the time.)
Because open world games usually focus on how big the world is instead of what you can actually do and actual game mechanics. They should go for quality over quantity, the best example being the Yakuza series.

These. Or an actual meaningful open world like BotW
See that small building with crap textures?
You cant go in it
>>379931917
A linear game where everything is carefully crafted instead of strewn across a barren landscape
>>379931917
Walking simulators with quicktime events.
Games are like movies, David Cage said it best.
>>379932131
yeah, like xenoblade x, nier automata, yakuza, and breath of the wild!
>>379931917
A vibrant world instead of an empty wilderness.
>>379931917
dakr souls
Most studios create bland and lifeless open worlds that are extremely boring as fuck. They think just being open world is good enough, but for it to really work, you have to add life and character it. Compare Morrowind to Ass Creed.
>>379931917
They would rather press forward to walk in a straight line, linear games are trash they just make me feel confined with no actual choice to where I'm going
>>379932303
BOTW was pushing it too, but it got enough entertainment value kinda.
>>379932464
Are you 17? Back to studying kiddo.
>>379932464
All open world games do is increase the travel time between places of significance.
>>379931917
The larger your world, the less attention can be given to each part of the game. It's literally quantity over quality.
V would rather have a linear game on rails that consists solely of quick time events
I don't automatically hate open world, but it's much easier to get wrong than linear design. A bunch of people in the industry seem to think open world automatically equals better, more popular game these days.
You're sacrificing level/scenario design for openness, you better have some pretty top fucking notch exploration to make up for it.
>>379932464
do you have super mario world because its linear
>>379932287
This is exactly my gripe.
You can say a game is open world, you're just admitting all the effort and development time is stretched a lot thinner in exploration especially, as well as other mechanics, to just make everything big.
reminder that this was considered pretty basic level design before open world games became normal
>>379932392
>Nier Automata
>Open world.
I can't beelieve how many people actually think this unironically.
>>379932965
*hate
I know you dont mean what you are saying but I cant help being b8ed
>>379931917
>What would you rather have?
Whatever the level design in Bloodborne would be called.
>>379932965
that's a 2D game there is no way to not be linear
>>379932464
why do people think it's either straight line linear corridors or open worlds full of nothing? "non-linear" is a thing
>>379931917
Nuanced level-design between freedom and linear. See Mario 64.
>>379932131
>muh porn VN's
Two words:
HUB
WORLDS
>>379933453
it depends, games like Dishonored have multiple paths to go around a level, but there are games which are literally a straight line with almost no different paths to take
>>379932053
fpbp
>>379931917
That wasted open space doesn't make your game any better. Those resources could've been used to make well crafted, but smaller, areas.
