And yeah i 100% agree with you about fallout 4 being a huge step back, the voiced protagonist was a fucking disaster when it comes to dialogue since everything is so limited. Even worse when it comes to mods, New Vegas had some fucking fantastic mods that even had some pretty damn good voice acting, but since the player already has a predefined voice the player's dialogue is super limited. What i've seen is modders chopping up bits of dialogue from the main game and making them into disjointed sounding sentences for the player to speak, or just using generic yes/no responses from the game's default dialogue.

The most difficult choice in game

Think about Episode 2. You have that major sequence with Kate right? she's not the main character, but you still care about whether she lives or dies. And she CAN live or die, depending on your choices. Even choices stemming back to Episode 1 factor into her life.

And then the aftermath of Kate's death, when you're in the principal's office. You have the choice to pin blame on 3 different characters. But whether the principal believes your accusation or not, depends on the choices you've made stemming from Episode 1. You can even fail to blame on Nathan if you make the wrong choices.

So what I'm suggesting, is that perhaps with only 3 episodes, they could potentially craft very meaningful choices in the ends. Since the branching paths of only 3 episodes, is a lot easier to manage than the branches of 5 episodes.

In the end, it's all up to the player's choice, and it's silly to try to say one of the endings is canon unless the developers choose to clear that up on a sequel. My take is that it was never Max's responsibility to save the city. She received powers for no reason, and using them to save her friend was the only option true to her character.

Luckily, I can attest that it's entirely possible to dislike Chloe and still like the game. Obviously the game setting is that Max is predisposed to cut Chloe some slack, and there's at least an attempt made to make her grow on players, but for some, myself included she just won't ever be likable.

Which isn't to say she's a bad character, she is realistic in that sense. It would be retarded to assume that every person is going to like, or eventually learn to like EVERY single human being ever. Chloe is pretty divisive, but obviously a lot of people do like and empathize with her, and others don't.

When the storm came to really destroy the town, she knows full well that in order for everyone else to live, that she must die, and she's willing to accept it. If Max so chooses. Because she puts faith in Max making the right choice.

Max's character arch is about finding inner strength. But she needs Chloe to help build it up. She doesn't need Chloe as a partner. She just needed a "week" with her best friend, to remember she's Max Fucking Caulfield, and she isn't chickenshit.
