what the fuck were they thinking when they made this husk of shit
nitendo didn't tough 3d gaming was going to be a thing. so they put a dpad grip in case it 3d gone the way of vr and they could still make 2d games with a dpad.
Proper wrist/hand alignment for controlling a character in three dimensions.
Also, they'd assumed that developers would use the different handles for different sorts of games. Stick/buttons for 3D games, pad/buttons for 2D, pad/stick for odd choices where you'd want two control inputs. However, outside maybe one game which used pad/stick, absolutely everything used the stick/buttons option.Mischief Makers was actually rather annoying to play, for this reason. As such, the d-pad and L shoulder button might as well had not been there.

Nigga, the n64 was literary build for 3D
a controller adaptable to 2D (Dpad and buttons) or 3D gameplay(stick and buttons)
its really not that hard to comprehend

Only real problem with it was a plastic joystick

"What is this new 3D thing? How do we make it control good? How do we make it feel good, we don't know anything about this new tech!"
They intended to port a ton of shit from the NES/SNES during development but couldn't figure out how to get the DD64 to work in the wild and scrapped it. The controller was designed because Nintendo has wanted to rob people with re-releases for a lot longer than apparent.
