not that excited. Ori was mediocre. blandly pretty, boring world. story that didn't say or do anything apart from emotionally manipulate over and over again (the DLC made me literally laugh out loud when yet another fucking parent died). worst of all: a metroidvania without bosses. what was that. those trial and error super meatboy sequences were really bad.

and then Hollow Knight comes out, is awesome in every way that Ori wasn't, and doesn't get half as much recognition/press. oh well, I'll play any metroidvania with decent production values so I'll be playing the Ori sequel too. hope it's better

Hollow Knight definitely has the better combat while Ori's combat is almost nonexistent (you just spam the same homing attacks and occasionally use the charge attack, but flinging back projectiles and throwing enemies off a cliff is pretty satisfying as fuck. The fact that your default attack homes in doesn't make combat too challenging that requires good positioning in contrast to Hollow Knight.) When it comes to platforming and general mobility, Ori definitely takes the cake.

I think I got like halfway through this game (past all the Definitive Edition added stuff, then like two temples in and after the big chase sequence with the owl) before I realized I was fucking bored out of my mind. I'm not even sure how to explain why. The production values are objectively fantastic, the style of the game is great, and the music is really soothing and well done.

Yet at no point did the gameplay or the world itself really suck me in. I never really felt satisfied or a feeling of accomplishment no matter what I did. It's really a shame too, because I went into it completely optimistically and with no preconceived notions whatsoever.

Maybe they'll manage to fix that key lacking ingredient that escaped me with the sequel. I'm not sure if I'm even making any sense though.

It's easy to laugh at graphic whores. But I thnk that people who say "the important thing is the aesthetic design" and neglect game design deserve to be laughed at too. Ori is a fucking terrible videogame, and its artistic values are the only thing that it has going for it.
