When you start describing things as "soulless" or "soulful" thats where you lose me because there are very clear guidelines that make us like certain things. I agree that 90s anime looks awesome. Just saying digital art can be awesome too. Theres some digital recreations of DBZ scenes that are straight upgrades as far as im concerned. I wouldn't say a villain, but they're being more accurate to how Toriyama wanted Goku to be portrayed in the anime. Toriyama didn't like that the anime tried to play Goku up more as a hero than as a guy who just really likes to fight, and the English dub pushed that to an even higher level by making him a borderline superhero ("I am the hope of the universe!" etc.)

Toriyama describes it as avoiding the "poison" element of Goku's character. You can see it in the way the story progresses though. Goku let Piccolo Jr. survive because he wanted to fight him again. He let Vegeta live for the same reason and not because "He could become a good guy" like the English dub said. He stopped fighting Freeza because he realized he was no longer enjoying the fight knowing that he would win. He lets Gohan fight Cell because he wants to see the extent of Gohan's power, even though doing so could put everyone in jeopardy. He could have stopped Boo with Super Saiyan 3 the first time he encountered him but decided against it because he wanted to give Trunks and Goten a shot. He could have beaten Majin Vegeta with Super Saiyan 3 but once again holds back because he wants to enjoy the fight, even though it would give more energy to revive Boo. He even threatens to kill a Kaioshin for trying to prevent the fight.

What Super is doing lately is trying to show that aspect of his personality while not trying to make him out to be a hero. Goku does have morals, but he's not trying to enforce justice.
