Fishing Hamlet has everything beat in terms of atmosphere, I just love the whole thing. Level design and enemy placement are nothing special, but I love it anyway.

Lordran is my favorite setting overall though.

Painted World is pretty high up there before Dark Souls 3 expanded on it. It was really mysterious at the time with all that Velka shit, also the first snow level in Souls.

I just really fucking love nighttime winter landscapes and haunted castles.

The Gutter from Dark Souls II. It's my least favorite game in the series, but that level is so much fun to explore and light all the sconces. I loved finding the black moth there and just had a fun time getting through that level.

Bloodborne is technically not a souls game, yes, this is true. However, the reason why people call it a "souls" game while not technically being one is for two reasons. The first and most obvious one is that it is a "souls RPG" or a "souls-like". Basically an action RPG that takes place in a nonlinear but not open world, death being a core gameplay mechanic, the whole "currency doubles as EXP" thing, hitbox and i-frame oriented combat, emphasis on non-verbal storytelling, where you find the story yourself through item descriptions, short NPC monologues, and the world itself, rather than lengthy exchanges between characters and cutscenes. Other things like steep learning curves, builds based on stats and equipment rather than classes, abilities, or feats, relatively unforgiving yet fair combat and gameplay, steep yet rewarding combat, and tons of other things.

The second points comes from the fact that FromSoft, who created the souls games and the genre as a whole, or at least popularized it, is the developer of Bloodborne. This was a huge selling point, and the game was literally marketed on being a faster-paced victorian dark souls really. Unlike other FromSoft games like Armored Core, Bloodborne is similar to Souls games many ways. Its the same dev in the same genre, which was popularized by said dev. Why are people so autistic about this?
