Well, it was pretty obvious that they really only cared about it potentially fucking them out of sales to begin with, so it's not like they kept it up. They did a decent job right out of the gate by DMCA'ing like crazy and having SFM animators' Patreon profiles suspended, but they took the foot off the gas pretty soon afterwards.

No, it was a double edged sword of PR. One it pleased the good goys who hate porn, like Australia, South Korea (a major seller for Blizz) and UK. While it also brought the fact there was porn being made regularly, which got them sales.

Put it this way, they failed harder than Ken Levine trying to stop the Elizabeth porn for Bioshock Infinite

They did partially succeed, actually. All they went after were SFM artists and such who were using models and other resources taken from the game itself.

They managed to get most of them either off of Patreon or at least forced them into hiding what they're making, had one notable artist quit the scene, and caused a few others to start using fanmade models.

They did about as well as you could hope for.

SFM were ripping their models directly and using them in porn. That's not abnormal. The problem was the porn arrived BEFORE the game and so typing "Overwatch" into Google and going to Images resulted in porn. Videos also resulted in porn.

It was done as a PR stunt and to make sure South Korea didn't flip it's shit. You do realise South Korea has a TOTAL porn ban, right? So had they seen Overwatch had loads of porn, they'd have classed it as illegal and they'd have lost sales. South Korea buys Blizz games cause of SC; theoretically anyway.
