everyone has likes and dislikes, some people miss wasting time exploring and finding little secrets that do almost nothing, others enjoy being on rails and being told what to do to feel awesome.

These groups don't match well and developers are repeatedly trying to make something for both of them when in reality it would be easier to just decide who your game is for and make it for them, a broader audience always includes more people who will dislike it.
