Flat anime girls are great, but I felt like the level design and balance in disgaea 1 was really half-assed. It just felt like a chore to play through each map, rather than a new and exciting experience like in good SRPGs. Rather, it seems like the appeal of disgaea is supposed to be the ability to mold your favourite characters into overpowered killing machines (though optional grinding; no grinding is necessary for the main story, it's just a dull SRPG without it).

So if like SRPGs but disliked Disgaea 1 for the above reasons, I might like one of the later disgaea games? Are they more SRPG focused rather than relying on sandbox-ish grinding appeal?

What about the other NIS games, e.g. soul nomad and phantom brave?

yes, just the characters and stuff alone is enough to be a memorable experience. gameplay happens to be great as well.
