The gameplay is worse. Yes, it's an action game, and you get to block and do the same guard cancel combos repeatedly, but there is no point in collecting equipment and you don't get to use skills for anything but damage and healing. Solid games if you're in the mood for it, but definitely worse. Not saying the originals were the pinnacle of jrpgs, but they had above minimal depth.

.hack was kino ahead of its time and still is, sad how it got ripped off and turned into chuuni nu-weeb shit for people who became anime fans in the '00s

It can be hard getting through the anime it's meant to build character and the world so I suggest watching it with a friend or two.
But in the end you will like it, I suggest playing it unlike all these other dude bros toting there call of duty snap backs.

Nigga the 4 games combined were about 80 hours long. Plenty of other RPGs of that time were 60 - 100 hours long and weren't split into 4 parts.
It's not even so much the length that's the issue and more the fact that all four "games" have literally the exact same gameplay with no additions or changes.
