In terms of gaming overall? Not really.
In terms of Zelda as a series, it's beyond amazing. To go from gated zones with linear story to total open world with total freedom is such a change, it feels like a leap of three generations. But that's because BotW basically did what the last three generations of Zelda games should have been doing.

That freedom results in boredom though, besides the shrines, which are not fantastic by any means (some are a waste of time or copy pasted) exploring the world is very pointless in breath of the wild.

BotW isn't perfect by any means. But I would argue that exploration is not one of its problems. The shrines should have been replaced with a couple underground temples and a lot more overworld dungeons. But all the other stuff the game did on the overworld was exactly what Zelda should be doing.

Emulators are pretty amazing

Agreed. Throw a couple of dungeons that are triggered by a quest or you stumble upon and the game could be amazing. Just imagine if they had a water temple you found by diving into the water or some shit.
That's another thing, each area felt like it wasn't fleshed out enough. The divine beasts could be cleared in no time flat. I loved the rito place but I cleared all the quest lines in like 3 hours.

Ninty should have fused a couple of shrines together and add a few monsters inside it.
