online ranked is fun even if you're not good, there's still the capability to make some sort of comeback each round if you at least try and play defensively and focus on a few attacks that are good punishers

Anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter, KoF and MK/Injustice have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" rage art moves are just laughably broken. Instead of a supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T7 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their rage move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, slow motion over and over again also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!

If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.

Just leveled up my Jack to Grand Master. Nothing to brag about, but I felt a great boost in confidence and my overall game plan today. ff1 is an amazing tool, use it a lot, and so is db1, Debugger is GODLIKE, not sure if you can lowparry it or not. Just don't be too predictable with it, highcrushes are still a thing.

To all of you thinking about whether to main Jack or not, do it. He's solid as fuck in this game. I also feel like he's really great for people who try to learn to play the game the right way, you can't really mash shit with him since he lacks fast moves, but but most of his stuff pushes people far far away, even if you fuck up some executions chances are pretty high you won't be punished. And his grabs are pretty godlike too, once you teach them to respect your lows, throw out some Tombstones and justframe uppers, trust me, you will make people mad.

Learn his lows, most of them got a pretty tricky combination and some of them lead to combos. Don't eat his scrub armor moves. His hop is pretty damn amazing, be aware. Lots of Miguels love to spam his ff2, you can duck after a 1 followup and step the 2 followup, both lead to painful punishes. His command grab leads to a mixup, don't mash. Oh and he's got a safe i10 launcher with a good reach and a good i14 WS launcher too. I honestly feel like Miguel is a sleeping top tier material.

Go play the story mode, it's the closest thing to a tutorial that's in the game, you'll get to try out various characters too.

Then go and get yourself some guides. TT2 and T6 guides are still mostly legit when it comes to basics of movement, otherwise stick to T7 material. Aris (Avoiding The Puddle) has some nice protips on his channel too. I suggest you focus on wakeup options, those might be pretty overwhelming at first.

Then pick a character you like, go to practice, set the dummy Action 2 to Guard All, go through all the moves, see what moves look good and what moves combo naturally. Then go to https://drunkardshade.com/2017/05/27/tekken-7-top-15-moves-for-all-characters/ and find out your character's most abusable moves and why they are so.

Afterwards, it's all about practice. The difference between 2D and Tekken is that every character have a shitton of moves and you need to know most of them to play effectively, that might be the hardest part for the newcomers. If you feel like you're struggling with some particular characters,try to memorise those moves you have the most trouble with, go to the framedata and learn the frames of those moves.

When you'll feel comfortable and get better at executing specific moves at specific times, learn some simple BnB combos and go wreck some scrubs online. Your path to glory has just begun.

Got cheesed online by Rage Arts one too many times, and long story short, I snapped my disc in half in disgust. I was that angry. Then I slammed my controller against the wall after I realized what I did and that broke too. Then I cried in my basement for a full hour because Harada introduced a bullshit mechanic that ruined my experience and my week. I paid full price for this game, and all I got was pain and frustration. I can't forgive that.

Rage arts are hella balanced. They take damage when absorbing with super armor so either block like a normal human being and full launch punish them if they're not Jin or Steve (and even then duck and hop kick) or use a hugely damaging move to kill them in the RA.

Ki charge makes it so you can't block + every hit you take is a counter hit. But you get a counter hit on your next attack if it hits. AKA it's super bad.

I've been in the FGC for a long time and can tell when a FG is a flavor of the month usually. Tekken is getting lots of press from random shit and everything I hear is super positive with lots of discussion of trying to get good-- this seems like it's going to be a game that lasts a decent amount of time. Or at least until everyone realizes this game is hard as balls to get good in and then it just ends up like Tekken 6. The best possible outcome is it ends up like Tekken 5DR which was massively popular and stayed alive for a long time, and this game's release reminds me of T5's.

That just means that you get a guaranteed throw attempt, it's still breakable. The best Kings don't do that. It's just asking to get blasted in the face with a counter hit, or if they're using it as a hard block punish they're styling on them instead of going for the guaranteed damage.

No, because you're still not getting it through your head that good players will still break this shit if they guess correctly. Throws are a 50/50 so sometimes they will not break GS correctly, it doesn't mean they did not try. When you get good enough reactions you can see the throw animation and make a break even during a move.

You just have to guess what throws the opponent is going to do next. Some stuff's obvious, like the Reverse Arm Slam starter always goes into a Backdrop, and you can escape both of those throws by tapping 1.

Other stuff you have to predict what move the opponent is most likely to do. Since the Arm Breaker is the opening grab for the Rolling Death Cradle that's most likely what the opponent will attempt. So to break the Chicken Wing you want to hit 1+2, and if that fails you want to hit 1 to stop the Cradle. Of course the opponent could instead go for a Struggle Combination chain, which would avoid those escape commands but do half as much damage.

Screwdriver chain throws are a complete grab bag since the player can manually select if the escape will be a 1 or a 2 for each throw, or they can end it early with a 1+2 escape throw.
