I'm playing Samurai first but I will try RDM next, they both look like good DPS.

It was better than ARR because they didn't have to ease you into the world with typical mmo shit, they just went right for the FF plot. Classes got less boring to play but also more tedious, if that makes sense. Alex didn't have the emotional anchor that Coils did, but the fights were still fun in my opinion. Continued vertical progression is disappointing, but it won't stop me from playing.

It was an alright expansion after 3.2. 3.0 (after the leveling, which was great) and 3.1 sucked ass and almost caused me to quit outright. From 3.2 onwards they seemed to get their shit together, and even if the endgame formula has long since gotten stale at least the stuff they're making with the formula is decent.

Raiding was overall shittier than ARR. Not at all sad to see Alexander go. The story and atmosphere were meh, and the designs were all over the place. Gordias had two absolutely terrible fights and fucked tuning, while Creator was just boring and undertuned all around. Midas was stellar and I really hope Omega is closer in mechanical difficulty to it than to Creator.

Honestly the best thing about this expansion was the class design, and that's going away with all of the "streamlining" and dumbing down happening in Stormblood.

ARR was a barebones, basic experience that I had high hopes of an expansion fleshing out

Heavensward did no such fleshing out, and in many ways was inferior to the base game. It took the shitty progression system from ARR that I had hoped to god was a placeholder and did nothing to spice it up, stuck a bunch of hodgepodge feeling additions onto jobs that made a number of them feel awkward, had a vastly inferior raid tier from almost all angles, and the new types of content it did create were largly complete washes

And despite all of that, 4.0 looks to be even worse. And I'm not even particularly a fan of ARR, I just gave it a pass since it was a shaky reboot

how were the raids?

I loved Heavensward.

The main story was a huge step above ARR as well as the pacing. It was incredibly satisfying to fly once unlocked. They did a good job at making it feel rewarding. Machinist and Astrologian both turned to be fun jobs to play; good additions to the game.

Alexander was the only big disappointment about the expansion. It just felt lackluster compared to Coil. I had a hard time caring about the story surrounding and the gobbies made terrible antagonists.

Jobs were designed to be very narrowly aimed towards playing a specific role-- Tank, DPS, Healer; while classes were intended to be able to expand out and dabble in other roles as a result of being able to choose a wider variety and more skills, allowing for more effective and versatile play in small parties where all roles may not be filled.

Unfortunately, with 2.0's launch there weren't enough skills to make classes worthwhile in 99% of cases, nor was there content that they could be effective in, and since then almost every major patch has shat on them in some way or another.

Marauder and a few other classes actually had some uses early on-- Specifically, marauder in PVP was an absolute monster from being able to stack literally every cross-class damage boosting skill alongside berserk, the single strongest damage boosting skill normally balanced by Warrior not having access to any other damage boosters. This alongside a set of powerful attacks that had a built in slashing damage buff and no directional attacks made them a legit DPS role when they had all their buffs up, while also being able to temporarily switch to a strong tanking build by throwing up all of marauder's innate defensive cooldowns.

By going marauder, you traded overall defense and offense for short bursts of extremely high offense with a burst of modest defense.

They could have chosen to expand more upon classes and give similar choices to other jobs, but decided to essentially remove them from the game instead.

I like a lot about XIV, but what absolutely kills it is their progression system. It's complete garbage. There's no sense of reward, it's incredibly repetitive, and it got old by 2.1

RNG gear from fates or other content? Worse. Rng sucks.
Letting everybody gear up immediately without capped limitations? Worse. It would kill the longevity of the game.

DRG main here, DRG is stupid easy right now. You press one sequence of 5 buttons, then a 2nd sequence of 5 buttons, and repeat them over and over, hitting all your oGCDs as they come up.

The ONLY complexity you could see in it is that the 4th skill in each of those two sequences is randomly chosen between two skills that each have a different positional requirement (And mind you, the penalty for failing it is very slight) and the blood of the dragon status, which if you just use geirskogul whenever you get it close to the 30 second duration cap you'll be using it more effectively than 90% of DRG players.

So, when you use BotD, it starts a buff with like 20 seconds on it that raises your jump damage and lets you use Geirskogul. Whenever you use Geir, it takes away 10 seconds from your buff. However, every time you use your 4th combo hit, it adds 15 seconds.

Ideally, you'd want to spam Geir as much as possible while still leaving enough blood for you to make it through your combo and generate more.

It's safer to just wait til you max out the duration at 30 seconds, use geir, then build it back up to 30, repeat.

Worth noting: This mechanic is getting dumbed down with SB so that you don't have to manage the timer anymore. Please look forward, etc.

Honestly wouldn't be so bad if they add a cross-job sort of thing. The classes feel like dead weight pretty much, I doubt we're going to be getting a summoner/scholar split anytime soon.

Just add new things to do within the jobs. Add in greatswords for PLDs, shields for DRK, tanking abilities for DRGs and SMN pets, give us some variety. I can understand the difficulty in balancing a main and sub-job, but this can be done even by the laziest and most incompetent designer.
