Theres a new FIFA/Madden title out every year, and the basic gameplay rarely ever changes that much. Everyone knows what to expect from pretty much every major sports franchise at this point, even the major fans. It's just not really worth spending the time on at E3.

What's the point of these sports games? Do these people lack imagination so much that their idea of a fun game is a 1:1 recreation of a sport they could just really watch or play? Or is it lazy/disabled people that can't actually go outside? I like to play tennis every so often, but I never felt inclined to play a tennis game. A strong E3 presence is important for stockholders who go to these events looking to see who has the strongest contention for the next few years. If EA failed to present their yearly sports titles they would lose a large portion of their shareholders who only care about them for the sports games.

An absence of sports games from E3 is also definitely how EA plans to exit that market in the unlikely event that they lose a lot of footing. Either by an exit of consoles from the market, or if they just choose to sell the division to another company.
