These. The levels don't feel nearly as inspired as 64's, and of course they're not as varied either. The platforming with FLUDD is not bad, but the lack of movement options in secret levels makes them very annoying. It's super easy to die in them because you stood on a little slope and started sliding for no reason. The blue coins were a horrible idea. The underwater segments are trash. Sunshine definitely has strengths, but overall it doesn't hold up nearly as well as 64 does.

Annoying voice acting jetpack. Super long/cutscene heavy intro in a mario game. People get into an autistic tizzy that getting 100% is too difficult (even though there's no reward), they're brainlets that can't deal with the objectively better controls or increased difficulty from other games in the series.

Those controls don't go away when you have the water pack, and you can use the water to improve on those controls (by doing stuff like sliding on water you made to go super fast or extend your airtime)

The water was also there to show off the hardware. Lots of early sixth gen games were water focused because the tech progressed enough to first start being impressive. The water in mario sunshine still looks really great today for example

The only thing Sunshine got right was the movement, hopefully Odyssey has a combination of Sunshine's movement with the great and varied level design of the Galaxy games.

sunshine does feel like a precursor to odyssey though, with it's levels that look like they actually all belong in the same world (it's not proper open world since its full of warps, but seeing other levels in the skybox instead of just endless abyss was neat)

I don't hate it per say, but the design was definitely a step in a odd direction compared to the direction 64 took. I'm not even a 64fag, but I do at the same time genuinely believe that 64's design heavily lent itself to solid 3D platforming and discovering new ways to get around.

The FLUDD based platforming/obstacles/progression in sunshine felt more like it was shoehorned in for the sake of flood. The big open areas felt less interactive with Mario and his abilities themselves so much so as it was an extension of only flood. It felt much less like you're platforming with Mario than you are with a control gimmick.

That said Mario Sunshines still solid and achieves what it sets out to do just fine but over all I'm just kinda meh to it. I think its a thing dependent on which 3D game you experienced first.

Also, just a food for thought In a couple years we're going to have kids who grew up with 3Dland posting here legally, defending it above Sunshine and 64, just let that sink in.

Why do people lose their heads over the small amount of voiced lines Bowser got? What about the voiced dialogue Peach gets in her letter and the ending in 64, if you're gonna complain about Bowser speaking then do the same for Peach as well. Im a big sunshine fan but the cutscenes were a bad idea.

In mario 64 you get a brief intro, then you walk into the castle and get a couple text boxes. Then there's no more cutscenes until you beat the game.

In sunshine you have a lengthy cutscene, walk down a hallway and shoot some water, then have even more cutscenes and then you get railroaded into chasing around a thing until you can finally actually play the game, and there's a couple cutscenees that break up the action like the I'M YOU'RE MAMA??? one

There's "cutscenes" everytime you get to a new area of the castle, and everything you find a boss like level. Bowser never shuts the fuck up either.

It was limited because of n64, but it still had way more cutscenes then Sunshine, which had long loading times.

Shit like blue coins is cancer.
It has the pachinko machine and the lilypad and loads of other levels based on outright broken mechanics
The game is full of glitches as were a lot of the Gamecube games in the era, being forced out too early to try and fill the library.
The bonus levels where they take away FLUDD are the best part of the game by a landslide.

The game is honestly just not very good. As much as I found Galaxy 1 and 2 to be mediocre those are just better from a playability standpoint. Odyssey looks like it'll be the best one since 64, I can only hope it will be at least.
They really should just make a game that is nothing but the FLUDD-less bonus rooms though, just a game that's like 70 of those back to back.
