Critical is harder than Proud with half the hp, almost everythings a one shot by a certain point with the exception that you start with around 40AP with additional LuckyLucky abilities and some stuff to help you out with item grinding and getting damage through the end of comboes.

I'd say the main game is about the same, but optional conent is way harder in kH2 on critical at least.
If you really just want to learn for now go with normal, the proud balance is a bit weird in KH2 since it has almost the difficulty of Crit but not the ability and stat boni from crit.

Level 1 Critical on KH2FM is way harder than Proud on KH1FM. KH1FM at least lets you do infinite cures. KH2FM lv1 Crit you get one shot from almost everything. Any other difficulty in both games are easy to breeze through.

First one is from my regular Proud run that I didn't do any of the secret bosses on, second is from my 100% Proud run, and third is from my Beginner Speedster/Unchanged run, which didn't give me a battle record. Still, I thought it was interesting that there were different pieces of art. I had never seen the other two before.

I had never run KH on Proud before, so I was happy that I managed to do it. Even happier when I beat Sephiroth.
