It was dead since the middle of 7th gen when all their japanese push died once they saw it wasn't working and 360 lost all of its exclusives (1st parties aside) and heavily relied on 3rd party temporary exclusivity contracts like early CoD DLC maps as their one and only solution for the rest of the gen.

Xbone is Xbone, nothing more to add to that.

MS at this point are just turning the Xbox brand into W10 "Steam" machines. They know they can't compete in the actual race so they're side-lining with this. For those who own a mid/high range PC Xbox doesn't matter anymore. For those who like to only play on consoles (so the current target audience for Xbox AKA PC-for-the-living-room) PS4 does everything better with more software.

MS aren't helping themselves by truning Halo to shit after Bungie's departure, turning Gears to shit ever since 3 (and now it's pure mediocre-status, the IP no longer holds any interest and no one cares about it or the new developer), other studios like Lionhead are dead and MS still manages to cancel their most interesting projects with japanese devs. Be it Scalebound or Phantom Dust's remake (which turned into a half-assed re-release instead)

Money doesn't buy healthy and long lasting good third party relashionships.

Nintendo was THE giant during NES and SNES eras, many media/tech/manufacturing companies stepped into the gaming industry and immediately died (like Panasonic), so why is it when Sony came in with the PS1 90% of 3rd parties jumped ship from the previous giant (Nintendo) and focused all their development efforts on PS1, and PS1 ended up selling 3x as much as the N64?

Was it truly just money? Or the fact that Nintendo was keeping everyone by force with aggressive market/retail policies and took advantage of that with draconian policies (meddling with 3rd party development itself or publishing/localizing). Basically everyone got tired of Nintendo's bullying and went with the alternative, a complete newcommer, even though (at the time) I'm sure they assumed N64 would have 70%+ marketshare and remain the number 1 system just like NES and SNES.

Microsoft has never had good relashionships outside of a select few american developers. They've had to buy everything since day1 and got extremely lucky with games like Halo. But no developer cares about the Xbox brand or MS, they won't go out of their way to develop for them unless a big fat paycheck arrives.
Sony helps out with money too of course, but they also help with co-development (lending their 1st party studio talent, like JapanStudio X FromSoft making Bloodborne), or their amazing publishing deals, or their connections to the music/movie industry, offering recording studios or orchestras or libraries of licenced music. I could go on and on but the point was already made: You can't bruteforce yourself into the gaming industry with money alone in the long-term. MS already got into the "long-term" phase and we see how well they're doing.

That logic would make sense if dozens of millions of SNES users jumped ship to PS1, but that wasn't really the case, certainly not the main reason why PS became successful.
Sony successfully, and very consciously aimed and marketed the Playstation to people who weren't playing console video games back then. For example, Playstation was one of the main sponsors of the Champion's League. Can you imagine Nintendo buying a Super Bowl spot in the early 90s? Sony and their PS1-PS2 era marketing campaigns pretty much single handedly normified gaming.
And you seem to forget that for the majority of the PS3 era, literally all third party games ran like fucking dogshit on the PS3. No one cared about having a "healthy" relationship with Sony. But the PS4 is dominating the market, so third parties care more about PS4, that's it.

Success is what gets you good third party relationships, but money is what kickstarts that success.
With money (taking losses, buying exclusives) you get people to buy your console. Then once you have a big enough install base and are the biggest boy on the block developers simply can't afford to ignore you, that's your "healthy" relationship.
So far the only time Microsoft got to that point, they quickly squandered it all between Kinect and massively reducing first party efforts. Sony did the rest.

They ran like shit, but they were still released for it and it was still the default homeconsole for japanese games (even more so after the BlueDragon/LostOdyssey/etc MS japanese-push 2006-2009 period ended). Although that's not saying much since the 7th gen was a dark time for japanese games on homeconsoles.

Xbone is actually matching PS3 sales (I assume, since PS4 is selling double of what the PS3 was and Xbox is selling half of what the PS4 is) and yet no one gives the slightest shit to port games for it even though the architectures of the two systems are so similar. Sure, some japanese games like SF5 have an exclusivity contract with Sony (on consoles) but the majority don't and they still don't bother.

PS3 was a time of many Sony fuck-ups, a horrible launch and a horrible time for non-mobile/portable japanese games, and yet it still got supported, it built momentum throughout the gen rather than losing it, and it managed to sell 83million units, which is the worst Sony has ever done but it's still more than any Nintendo homeconsole except for the Wii and matches MS's record (which is the same number).
It just goes to show than even when Sony has a worst case scenario Xbone-tier launch they still manage to do pretty well.
