I'm going to ignore the bait to talk about something related.
Why do people cite Mother 3 as being better than Mother 2/Earthbound? Having recently played both, I don't see it.
Mother 3's setting and world feels more like a generic fantasy RPG world compared to Earthbound. Earthbound was interesting in that it took place in a modern (well for the time modern) parody of modern USA and other places, and the enemies, items, and everything revolved around that for the most part, with the exception of some of the magical/fantasy areas slipping through the cracks. It made it feel more surreal and unique.
Mother 3 takes place in Generic Fantasy Island instead of a real world parody and it goes down to even the small things, like the basic healing items being the generic nut line of healing items that a lot of JRPGs have used. Is it still quirky? Sure, but it loses its surrealness when fantasy creatures and areas are the norm instead of the exception, instead of being aliens or other obscure things that aren't treated as normal.
Not to mention the timed attacks was a horrible inclusion. It's okay when it's always consistent, like with Mario RPG or Mario and Luigi, but it's different for every enemy and there's no way to tell when to exactly hit the button until later in the game. This is made even worse by the fact that you need to play Mother 3 on an emulator for it to be in English, otherwise you have to spend time to learn Moon Runes and spend a ton of cash to get a cartridge. The timed attacks are basically impossible on an emulator, so it ruins the combat.
The story is really good, I understand that part. But everything else is inferior to Mother 2. The soundtrack, the setting, everything else, and timed attacks was not a good inclusion.

Mother 3 was a fantastic story and the gameplay was improved over Earthbounds barebones, run of the mill RPG system. Earthbound has its surreal quirkiness which was fantastic, but overall Mother 3 is the more complete experience.

It's all in the story. Earthbound doesn't really have much of a story to speak of, just several short independent arcs that you move between on your journey, and the depth lies more in the themes rather than what's directly told to you. The characters in your party don't have much personality and rarely speak outside of the moments before you recruit them.
Mother 3 on the other hand has a much more involving story with each story arc tying in with eachother well, more likable protags with clearer personalities, more spoken roles and bigger involvement in the plot, and a lot more depressing or thought-provoking scenes and characters without sacrificing the usual themes that carry the games. It loses some of Earthbound's surreal quirkiness, parody value and slight horror elements but makes up for it in a much more interesting plot.
I've never felt that the gameplay of either game was all that impressive. It's the same generic enemy types, same spells, same status effects and same grinding as any other JRPG but with a new coat of paint, and they don't offer any unique mechanics outside of the rolling HP bar (which is inconsequential for the majority of each game) and M3's rhythm-based attacks. There's little to no sidequests and the games are extremely linear. So with that in mind the only reason to play Mother games is for the "experience" outside of the gameplay and for some people, M3's stronger story offers a better experience than Earthbound's more surreal atmosphere.

I would honestly argue that the structure of the game is very different, and that it really depends whether you prefer a charming open world to a charming linear story. I think that the story is much better in M3, and I imagine the rhythm game is actually a lot of fun if you could actually do it, I don't blame the game for not working entirely on an emulator.

In the end I like the story and battle system better in M3, and the world better in Earthbound, but in terms of graphics, characters, music, that kind of thing it's hard for me to really decide. Truthfully I can't really decide which one I like more.

I need more Undervanias, guys. Hopefully something closer to Undertale's quality considering how underwhelming and honestly boring the games in OP's pic are (I tried all of them)
