A curved world would be pretty fucking cool over an open world game.
You wouldn't need to deal with "invisible walls"
It'd all be curved together.
You could even play with variable gravity
The closer you are to the axis of rotation, the lighter you are.
You could even have it so that if you move fast enough against the spin, you'd become lighter.

I have an idea for a WWI game set in alternate history where WWI doesn't end in 1916 but goes on, and the front line expands, deep into Europe, it becomes a sort of eternal war, technology is all but halted, and even reverses as on some far distant fronts troops run out of ammo and are forced to charge at enemy trenches with cavalry armed with bayonets on their rifles and nothing more
A war that breaks civilization, and you're just on a small front of that war trying to survive, all peace talks and treaties have failed because all factions involved have lost over 1 million men at this point, and have shifted their economies into war economies and are set to fight to the bitter end.
>>379719981
I wouldn't say it sucked for most people.

>>379721014

Come on dude, it was the first gilded era. If you were a factory worker, weren't in the aristocracy, and lived in any of the emerging industrial cities (especially in America), chances are your quality of life were pretty poor.
The gilded age caused the progressive era, the Marxist/socialist movements, etc., it's true. But it must've been really damn shitty to ever have needed to spark those in the first place, is all I'm saying.

I actually had an idea fleshed out in my head for an open world game set inside a hollow earth setting. Initially most of the world would be covered with fog/clouds but after you progress far enough in the first area the fog is lifted and you can see how the entire world curves onto itself. You wouldn't be inside the actual earth though, more like in the dead husk of a giant titan that's starting to wake up.
>>379708523
Tomb Raider, Age of Empires 3, AssCreed Liberation on top of my head.
>>379722591
I mean in this idea the point would be to show that sometimes there are no winners in war, instead of a treaty, the war just continued, theres no WWII just the "Last Great War" until all nations have driven themselves to exhaustion and depleted their resources, but instead of losing the will to fight they continued on, everyone having lost too much in the last great war to just give up and capitulate.

I think the problem with most spooky games is that they show you the scary thing, and by the end of the game you're so used to it that it can only be scary through time limits/jump scares/gameplay restraints. It gets even worse when the game gives you ways to defeat it.
The key is the mystery of it, and instead of the mystery unfolding and making sense, it only gets deeper and more mysterious.
As far as theme goes, they all work together well, because the main goal ought to be creating some ancient horror that'll always seem bigger than you. Here's some of my thinking for setting/protag
>Small coastal fishing town on the coast of Greece/Italy that's been inhabited since Greek/Roman times
>You're the nephew of the Lighthouse Keeper who needed work, your Uncle has "gone away on business", should be back in a week
>he never comes back
>Townsfolk never give you straight answers to who he was, where he went, always refer you to someone else
>Consider your to be a nuisance

>>fucking great setting, but translating it to video games is tricky since people expect either a walking simulator or a murder simulator and nothing in between.
The difficulty lies in coming up with interesting gameplay or some other hook that works for a small location. I'd like to see a game centered entirely around a lighthouse without any involvement of a village or similar. Maybe a hamlet of three buildings tops.
I guess an adventure game set around different kind or types of lighthouses could work.
There was a Myst clone called Lighthouse, but you actually didn't spend that much time in the eponymous location.

I love the mistrustful villagers deal in most horror but I have to wonder if isolation would play a better part in the overall dread and atmosphere of the setting.
>Ancient horror
If its some kind of entity or curse that has kept a hold over the island/town for generations that could work.
Maybe a monster in the water that the locals worship/make sacrifices to?
>Mystery that keeps getting deeper
Call of cuthulu eat your heart out I love it.
>Greek/Roman village
Opens doors for the ancient gods (Posieden) and their shenanigans, but the red/white architecture would be hard to make unnerving I feel. I'd be more drawn in by a Scottish/ Maine setting personally.
>Uncle Plot
I like it but it just seems a bit cliched, then again that could work if its a pretty camp story.
(almost 80s B horror in nature.....NOT /b/ although that would be terrifying)
>Issues with gameplay
Agree, so fucking burnt out with how the Genre's going as of late. This could be circumvented by an unending variety of grotesque creatures though.....
>people expect either a walking simulator or a murder simulator
Mainstream audiences man, so brainwashed to accept shit they take anything at this point (but that's a story for a different thread), We need the investigation simulator genre to make a comeback stat.
I come from a fishing family myself so where most kids got Hansel and Gretel I got 'the story of the time your da saw a eel monster eat one of his crewmen' So I naturally adore all media, especially horror with mist/ocean settings.

take risks and explore lots, turning in port reports from new places is your best way to make bank and recover fuel costs. quests are harder to do but worth it. and work towards getting a house as soon as you can, you can write a will and start passing down money and items to your next life because lordy you will die.

I kind of had an idea for something like that, but it might have seemed a bit boring or 'sjw' from /v/'s perspective.
Basically it's set in an alternate early iron age where Rome survived into the early 900AD as an empire and Boudica's rebellion was successful... Because she had backup from the Tuatha De Dannan and Fir Bolg.
Game goes that you're a Tuatha De Dannan going around Europe, mostly the British Isle, fighting Fir bolg and other Tuatha for the fuck of it, reminding belligerent Romans why they lost, fending off vikings, and brawling with their Alfar buddies.
Game would focus on lots of high destruction hack-and-slash-and-magic-blast with elements of Dynasty Warriors games where you effortlessly carve through shitloads of mooks. Though I'm thinking when you face down legitimate challenges, that's where the game shifts to something closer to Dark Souls dueling.
Basically, in a world of 'humanity, fuck yeah' this game is an unapologetic power-fantasy celtiphilic wankfest of "Puny humans get stomped or need to sit out while adults/gods talk"
>>379731920

never saw any gary oaks. Sure you had lichen tundra, but Vancouver Island isn't that cold and isn't that dry. It's pretty wet honestly, and paired with the lichen, rocky terrain and yet lush forests, it's actually interesting to look at.
An arcade wave race esque game where you are speeding through tropical valleys and ridges with sheer cliff faces and tight corridors.
