I actually disagree with you. I think that Season 1 was the best one and no episode will ever top Steven and the Stevens. All seasons after haven't compared because the show is more concerned on LORE and not on being entertaining and funny.

Once the whole Jailbreak reveal happened, it was cool, but it established the show as having a grand plot and conditioned the viewers to be on the lookout for that, so now, even as a person who likes the light hearted comedic episodes, I can't enjoy them as much because they don't further the "plot". A majority of Steven's laugh out loud and beautiful moments are in Season 1 and in Season 1 they didn't have time to ruin Lapis' character.

Because it's fun to exaggerate the human figure, it's a hell of a lot more fun to animate than a cel-shaded, more realistic figure, that's for sure.

Paul Coker Jr's one of my favorites because of his loose style, there's a lot of flow to it. In general there's been more American/European artists with that almost liquidity to the figures that makes it so appealing to look at, whereas a lot of Japanese comics and cartoons look more stiff, even when the figures are drawn well.

Former Capcom artist Kinu Nishimura is one of the few Japanese artists I like. Yusuke Murata's another.

These shows had literal hundreds of animators, with dozens focusing on single scenes. Anime doesn't have a fraction of the budget of golden and silver era western cartoons, you usually have one animator doing multiple scenes, that is more impressive if you ask me.

I think you are giving it too much credit. The show is not nearly as deep as you think it is and the topics it touches are not only fairly common in media, but also are not presented in a complex way. In fact most characters can be summarized in a few characteristics and feelings.
It is so much to the point that it becomes a parody of itself with the same characters not evolving and learning from their mistakes so they can keep doing them over and over.

Just take the love of the gems for Steven as an example. The first episode is one of the worst I have ever seen to the point of making me mad, just because they love him so much no matter he destroyed an ancient artifact. Then it was so bad they had to create a follow up explaining that it was "just a test" that he passed even if he failed. Se Steven begs for another test and discovers it's still rigged and the resolution is he stops caring about proving himself and accept the overprotective love of the gems, maintaining the status quo. To then in the taimeshift episode fail AGAIN on a test but because of his failure he learns something new that never comes up on the show again.

I don't care about the fussion when the gems do it, but when Steven fuses with Connie it makes me feel uncomfortable.
