My bet is that it isn't a retro system, but it is a retroalike, designed specifically for indie devs who make retro style games.

Seems likely that this is going to be a cheap ARM based retro/indie console, something along the lines of the Nvidia shield, or maybe a high-end retro system along the lines of some of the FPGA based Nintendos that have been floating around for a while now.

Outside possibility would be a Steam Machine since third party consoles is exactly what its supposed to enable. Valve is still pretty invested in it given the recent update and the big news yesterday on that front was that Valve had hired another fairly big name Linux driver dev (author of NIR used by all the open source Vulkan drivers), though apparently only for some kind of 3 month summer project before he starts back at college. There have been rumors swirling about a second gen with a more firm hardware spec for a while, and its the easiest option to build a console with access to the largest game library outside of Windows.

Seems unlikely, or you're talking about a much more expensive system since Valve is about the only company that seems likely to be willing to invest enough to do the bulk orders of an AMD SOC you'd need to put together something that would be really competitive against it on a price/performance level.

If its using an ARM SOC, which is the most likely option if they're doing this on their own then it won't be as powerful as the other current gen systems except the Switch.
