Should I be going for elite passes on my first run through or should I wait until I unlock all the ships?

What I want to know is what people are mapping there controls to. I tried having accelerate on the right trigger, bumpers for air brakes, and put weapons on buttons, it's comfy, but air brakes are variable so if you don't put them on the triggers you are at a disadvantage. But I can't find a comfortable config with the airbrakes on the triggers.

Feisar Speed is generally all you need for normal stuff, later ships won't help that much, many stick to it even after unlocking everything.
But well, Pirhana Speed is alright in low speed class for time trials, and Feisar Prototype is unbeatable on a few select tracks.
For Zone it helps to have AG-Systems Prototype (AG-Systems Agility is fine too).
For Elimination it hardly even matter what you use (I like AG-Systems Fighter best myself, Qirex has power but is so sluggy that you end up less active).
When you get to A+ you may want to use AG-Systems Speed.
