Voice acting is the cancer killing RPGs, so no, there aren't any god tier VAs. A good video game script needs to be written, edited, rewritten, in order to be good. What happens with VA is that, since they're paid per word spoken, the game developer is incentivized to a.) ship the game with as little dialogue as possible (no branching dialogue trees, minimized reactivity, etc.) and b.) not edit or rewrite the script down the line because VAs need to start as early as possible to record all of their lines, which locks the script and and prevents it from being changed much.

I don't care if you stuff them into other genres like FPS since they typically have shitty stories anyway. In RPGs, VA is absolute cancer.

No actually it's entirely on VA. Everything you do in game development has the possibility to affect something further down the line, basically dependencies.

The voice acting files depend on the script. For voice acted games that have mouth movement and get localized to multiple languages, there's 1 step further of matching mouthflap data to the language. So that's 2 potential steps that depend on the script being finalized.

This means the writers can't, 2 months before release, realize that some scene in Chapter 4 is too shitty to ship and edit it out. If there's no voice acting, all they do is change a line. If it is voice acted, they have to go record new lines and possibly fit mouth data again.

That's why VA is cancer, because it adds more scheduling pressure to an industry that already has a lot of moving parts. If you have a company of 50 people, you want them working at all points and not just sitting around.The environment artists depend on the engine programmers, the programmers depend on the designers, the composers depend on just enough of the game's atmosphere being established, so on and so forth, and not all of these issues can be solved with preproduction. Shit changes mid-development and adding VA into the pile is just awful for RPGs that already are dealing with a Gordian knot of shit to unfurl.

It is the standard now and I think the only way to handle it for RPGs is to just do what the Sims, earlier 3D LoZ games, and spore did and just make gibberish and grunts for when characters are talking, this saves on having to write natural sounding dialogue when two NPCs interact with each other and allows for rewrites with out having to recast the voice actor.

Older Trails games, for example, had huge scripts that could change on all sorts of small variables like which party members you chose to bring with you. The new ones have almost none of this, which is doubly embarrassing since they blatantly skimped on the VA process too. It's depressing when you handle your VA so badly that even the fucking English dub team -- the VAs included -- is embarrassed by how little work you put into it.

You are, in any case, completely right. Voice acting plays an integral role in the cinematization of movies, as it attaches a celebrity aspect to it in order to appeal to idolfags and other otaku.
