is there any difference nowadays? when getting a physical copy, you pretty much install the entire game onto your hard drive

Not really, the disc is just for DRM purposes and you could just sell it off if you're done with it. I'm just waiting on PS4 Homebrew to go through for backups like Puyopuyo Tetris.
